Technology Sample Paper on Aviation Safety Reporting System

The Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) is the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a voluntary reporting system that enables and allows pilots, flight attendants and other crew members of an aircraft to report their safety incidents confidentially. These reports are later used to improve air safety in the aviation industry. ASRS is run by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and was established in 1975. It collects and analyzes the various aviation safety reports that are submitted and then responds to them so as to minimize aviation accidents or incidents.

The ASRS report should indicate the date, location, persons involved, time and also the aircraft involved. It should also indicate the nature of the incident or event and the pertinent details. So as to be considered timely, the reports must be delivered not less than 10 days since the incident or the event happened unless that very period is extended for good cause. The Aviation Safety Reporting System forms are submitted to NASA via mail or electronically.

ASRS was primarily created for obtaining information so as to evaluate that information that’s generated and enhance the efficiency and also the safety of the present aviation system. The various operations that are covered by ASRS are such as departures, approach procedures, airport conditions, air maintenance and also landing operations.

The key to ASRS’s success is it’s confidentiality and also it’s independence that ensures that  reporters are shielded from negative consequences that may arise from bringing forward the safety incidents. Due to the immunity of the ASRS, the FAA can use the report submissions for sanctions, fines and penalties for violations made. The fines and penalties can however be waivered for those individuals or persons that violated the federal aviation statutes unintentionally. The FAA is the Administrator.

The FAA are prohibited from using the ASRS for enforcement because of it’s immunity policy. And by not using the Aviation Safety Reporting System, the Federal Aviation Administration encourages reporters to submit their reports as they are well protected and have no fear of negative consequences. As a result, the reports can be used to improve and make aviation safer. FAA’s immunity policy helps to encourage the submissions of safety incidents and other observations made by the reporter. If the FAA takes enforcement action against a violation that was purely accidental and that didn’t result in an accident, the reporter can use their Aviation Safety Report System form as a proof that the said incident was therefore reported.

In my own opinion, the ASRS is a fundamental program in the aviation industry and it helps correct a lot of things which might go wrong within the industry hence keeping it in check and also helping to achieve its primary objective which is to improve the safety of the aviation industry. Without the ASRS it would be very difficult to improve the safety of aviation since we would be blind to various challenges and situations that the persons in the industry face. Through it aviation can be made much safer by collecting information that would otherwise go unreported.
