Sample Essay on the Role of Social Media's Influence in Activism and Revolution on the World Stage

Introduction

There has been a change in the way people interrelate in the world. One of the main factors responsible for this change is the development of social networking sites. The role of social media in various activities cannot be underestimated, given the way information is being shared between people across the world (Berenger 17). For instance, people are in a better position to understand what is going on just by participating in the social media sites. A social media site responsible for information sharing is YouTube. It has enabled sharing of videos showing what is happening across the world. Such videos are referred to as being viral (Trottier& Christian 45). Another good example is the United States of American recent elections. Barrack Obama, who was a presidential contestant, actively used social media to convey his message of hope. Apparently, Obama would not be president, were it not for social media activities. Admittedly, social media has brought about many impacts to global activism and revolution.

Social media has been responsible for limiting political activities all over the world. For this reason, masses all over the world are more aware of the political activism that surrounds their daily lives. For instance, the recent activism in Egypt was spearheaded by actively taking part in social media networks. Some of the organizers of the revolution were famous bloggers. Another example is the use of Blackberry messenger in England, where various groups of people were capable of preparing political protests, which were eventually characterized by looting and all sorts of unrest (Trottier & Christian 47).

Another direction in which social media sites have played a role in global activism is through public education and the creation of awareness. System developers have been able to develop sites that enable people to access information regarding various political statuses in the world. For this reason, the people who access this information become more aware of their rights, as well as privileges. At the same time, social media allows for interactive learning among students all over the world (Berenger 23). In the process, the students exchange ideas on how to deal with various unstable political situations in various parts of the world. Such situations imply that social media sites enhance the exchange of knowledge regarding various ways of organizing revolutions, as well political activism.

Thirdly, social media networks have also enhanced immediate actions in the political and activism context. People have used social media networks to convey information regarding urgency in taking part in political revolutions (Trottier & Christian 56). Moreover, such situations are spearheaded by the responses observed in the social media networks. A good example of such an occasion took place in Haiti. The kind of revolution that was observed in the state was in the form of donations, which were enhanced through social media sharing.

Conclusion

In summary, it is prudent that social media networks have played a role in the development of political revolutions all over the world. This case is as a result of the improvement in fast information sharing. Some of the revolutions that are organized through social media networks may lack a strong base, resulting in poorly organized revolutions. As stated earlier, social media participation played a critical role in the triumph of Barrack Obama as the new United States President.
