The environment plays a big role in the rate at which the human body functions, especially when exercising. Humidity is one of the factors that alter the body condition both internally and externally. Shriveled hair, excessive sweating, dilated blood vessels, and slow processing of the brain are just a few to mention. The 2014 World Cup match between Holland and Mexico in Brazil was stopped for three minutes to allow the players to rest and hydrate. The objective of this study is to relate exercising in humidity and how it affects the human immune system.

Exercising in humid conditions has adverse effects on the human body especially the immune system. The human body struggles to keep itself at a cool temperature and this, results to excessive sweating. When the atmosphere is moist however, the sweat fails to evaporate from our skin, leaving the body relatively salty and sticky, and this could interfere with sweat pores and even blood vessels, which could in turn compromise the immune system (Lancaster and Mark 115). For effective respiration to take place, it is important for an individual to work harder during exercise for more energy to be produced. The process may however result to our bodies losing water and fluids that our bodies need and may lead to our organs functioning poorly putting the body immune system to risk.

Conversely, exercising in humid conditions is advantageous as it prevents dehydration, fatigue, and other complications that could tamper with normal body functioning. Dehydration directly affects an individual’s performance and may make affect the functionality of the body organs as well as blood flow, weakening the immune system (Lancaster and Mark 115). The process mentioned earlier whereby our bodies work to maintain a cooler conditions for our bodies is known as thermoregulation. Sweating is the most important process that keeps our temperature at bay. However, excessive sweating could result in dehydration, which means that the water levels in the body will decrease affecting blood flow. With blood flow in jeopardy, the distribution of white blood cells in the body will be hampered, and thus, the immune system will be weakened.

There are steps and precautions that need to be taken when preparing for a workout in either a hot or humid environment. An individual should keep hydrated at all times by drinking plenty of water. The second step is to have an adequate intake of electrolytes and carbohydrates. It is important to consider the choice of fluid intake. One should focus on fluids that contain water and glucose to cope with the conditions. As such, water by itself is not sufficient to stop the process of dehydration for one to withstand heat and humidity for more than sixty minutes.

Notably, exercising in humid conditions is more preferable than exercising in hot conditions. Other than exercising in humid conditions, individuals with the intention of boosting their immune system should drink plenty of fluids as mentioned above. Taking fluids before exercise or exercising in humid conditions enhance blood flow, which in turn helps boost the immune system. Also, consumption of carbohydrates is important as it helps maintain the levels of glycogen stored in the muscles, which is a big boost to the immune system.
