Sexual orientation denotes the psychological, sexual, affectional, and passionate attraction to a given gender; it mainly varies from heterosexuality to homosexuality (same sex relations). Unfairness, discrimination, and negative perceptions are greatly entrenched in the law and patterns of conduct. Law-makers’ inequality to same-sex relations is to an extent that would be intolerable for all other minorities. Human rights activists and lawyers seek to uphold social justice and guarantee dignity irrespective of one’s sexuality. In most instances, the law sets a higher age of consent for homosexual affiliations when judged against heterosexual relations.
One of the solutions to eliminating sexual inequality is lowering the age of consent. Nevertheless, if not carefully considered, reducing the age of consent would remove child protection measures. In this regard, there is a need to ensure that the legally acceptable age of consent does not undermine the strategies, resources, actions, and laws that address major aspects that lead to sexual abuse within the community. Another solution would be to ensure enhanced awareness and reputation of every form of sexuality. Nevertheless, this may result in enticing the young generation to a given form of sexuality over the other, hence creating public pressure. To curb such a situation, the advocates of sexual equality ought to ensure that sound ethical and fair practices are upheld. This will ensure that awareness and enhanced reputation is done for social good and betterment of the protection and rights for all forms of sexuality. In conclusion, every step taken towards ensuring sexual equality ought to consider carefully the benefits and drawbacks to the society.
