Sample Essay on Holland’s Theory on Career Choices

John Holland’s theory of career choice maintains that the major variables influencing career choices of an individual are personality and their background. According to Modak people tend to have preferences for those jobs that allow them to be around those whom they share a lot of things in common (29). In most cases, they tend to search those environments that will enable them utilize their potential to the maximum.

A career choice as noted by Strauser is an expression of one’s personality into spheres of work coupled with subsequent identification with a specific vocation (481). Attraction of an individual to a particular vocation is influenced by occupational environment that not only provides satisfaction but also meets their personal needs. The choice requires a high sense of self knowledge which equips individuals with capabilities of identifying a profession that is congruent to their personal aspirations and environmental demands.

A study by Modak reveals that different personalities are attracted to certain professionals and environment plays a critical role in influencing the way the personality organizes the mind in arriving at an informed career choice (29).

The theory is centered on six personality attributes that informs interaction between the environment personalities. To begin with, realistic personalities have preferences for environments require physical activities, coordination and strength.Profesionals in this environment are practical oriented and that’s why engineers and architects are identified with such personalities. Secondly, an investigative personality leans towards theory oriented vocations like law which requires gathering of information, organization and critical analysis in developing standpoints that are defensible (Strauser, 481).

Artistic personality prefers environments that allows for creativity and originality and that’s why artists are identify themselves with such attributes. Doctors and teachers drive passion from helping others and ensuring the well being of others hence favoring the social perspective of the personality. Enterprising personality on the other hand prefers a competitive environment that involves leading others and influencing business outcomes. Finally, conventional traits favors professions that are governed by the rule of law where precision and orderliness are the main guiding principle in the operations of the profession that’s why accountants and auditors are attracted to this type of environments.

The advantage of this theory is that it provides a framework that can be used to guide individuals in choosing vocations that will guarantee maximum satisfaction. However, Modak was critical to Holland’s ideas by noting that its assumption that there exist only six types of people is unjustifiable by both empirical and rational thinking (29).
