##### Sample Essay on the Law of Inertia

The Newton’s law of motion is applied in explaining the whiplash trauma and the consequent injuries when a body that is at rest state is acted upon by the external and unbalanced forces. According to the Newton’s first law, every object and, in this case, the human body is explained to be remaining in a state of rest. At this state, the body is said to have a uniform motion or is at a constant velocity that can only change when it is being acted upon by the external unbalanced force. According to the law, whiplash occurs as a result of human head remaining at a constant velocity when the rest of the body moves forward, and it tends to stay at rest unless it is being subjected to the external forces. Rear-end collision causes the body to move forward, but at the same time, the head resists the impact. The head is hence jerked in the rearward position that is relative to the body. The rest of the body moves with the car as a result of the force injected by the car seat but, the head tends to resist it. The abrupt bending of the head that follows gives rise to whiplash which is explained by the Newton’s first law of motion.

In terms of Newton’s first law (the law of inertia), how does a car headrest help to guard against whiplash in a rear-end collision?

When the car is under constant velocity, every object that is in it is at rest as well. The body would start to move when a net force that is equal to the one provided by the seat of that car is applied. The parts of the body that are not subjected to a net force would stay at rest. The headrest guards against whiplash in a rear-end collision in that that it brings the head along with the rest parts of the body.

When you push a cart, it moves. When you stop pushing, it comes to rest. Does this violate Newton’s law of inertia? Explain your reasoning.

Moving objects are subjected to friction, and it acts as a force that is external to the cart when it is in motion. The stopping of a moving cart is caused by the friction that acted on it. In the absence of friction, the cart would continue to move even after one stop pushing it. This does not violate the law of inertia because an external force acted on the cart.
