Sample Article Review Paper on the Pleasure of Anticipation and the Epistemic Value of Hope

The environment that human beings live in provides prolific stream of unfolding events that stimulate intimate experiences that create curiosity in their minds (Huron 2). In such instances, human beings find themselves anticipating for such an experience or even having hopes of attaining the experience. Luc Boven, a professor of philosophy at the London School of Economics, delved and wrote about the topic of pleasure of anticipation and value of hope. According to Boven, there are two puzzles of hope; where an individual is torn between believing in something that seems difficult to come about or just staying without hoping at all (669).

On the value of hope, Boven states that it has an enabling function, it offsets risk aversion, and that it spawns more attainable constitutive hopes (670).The enabling function of hope allows an individual to make a dominant decision where there is a dilemma. The second value of hope is to avert the phobia of indulging in a risk that seems to be fair. Boven gives an example of a gamble where there is a risk of losing an individual’s money or gaining (672). Hope will give a person the courage to assess if the gamble is fair as per the terms and risk his or her resources. Thirdly, hope can be used to realize that what was hoped for previously is not worth it. An individual may author an article addressing a specific field with the aim of receiving recognition for the contribution made to that field. Eventually, it may dawn on the individual that he has interests in this field and continue researching with the hope of garnering more knowledge rather than for mere recognition.

The value of hope in real life situation is significant and instrumental in array of situations. For example, cancer patients have survival chances that equal to the end-of-life chances (John et al. 676). Meeting such a patient gives a detailed meaning of the value of hope as explained by Boven. My friend was in this situation and he had many decisions to make that were dependent of the instruments of hope as illustrated by Boven. Firstly, the patient had to choose on whether to spend savings on medication or just dish them to the family members. Due to the value of hope, the patient has to avert the risk of losing his savings and not being healed by catering for medical bills. This means the patient will be determined to survive despite the chance of surviving being equal to that of dying(John et al. 677).

One advantage of hope is that it has an intrinsic satisfaction that provides a peaceful mind and pleasure of anticipation especially during hardships (Boven 676). Each day that dawn for a cancer patient may be mind-troubling and may cause mental imbalance that result to distress. Therefore, hoping is paramount in this situation as it creates an ambience moment and creates self-worth among the patient. Conversely, hope may result to future frustrations that may be painful to deal with. For instance, when an employee is hoping to get a vacation and he or she begins anticipating and creating mental images about the trip. Thereafter, the trip may be cancelled or the employee denied the sabbatical and this may be painful. Therefore, the value of hope is instrumental in some situations as it gives people a mental peace even though it is not proper to hope too much.
