Critical thinking incorporates the capacity to identify problems that require solutions, drawing together evidence to validate solutions, weighing up other choices of solutions, and involving others in the execution of solutions for desirable outcomes. Critical thinkers should therefore demonstrate creativity, confidence, flexibility, perseverance, and open-mindedness in their practices (Lunney, 2013). Critical thinkers are always aware of their capabilities and understand when to seek help from experts. They are quite flexible when adapting to change and are willing to persevere in every situation. Critical thinkers know when to apply standards and when to establish personal criteria in solving social problems. They are responsive to the world that is not ideal; hence, they are not bothered by the notions that even the best solutions may not be pertinent to all situations. In addition, critical thinkers envision plans and draw inferences that are backed by evidence.
Critical thinking is vital in nursing practice because it assists in making rational decisions while attending to patients. In nursing, critical thinking is usually directed by standards, ethics, codes, and policies, which enable nurses to apply logic in solving problems. Critical thinkers enhance accountability, as well as professionalism in nursing (Lunney, 2013). Nurses are required to analyze their clients’ situations into different components so that they can determine the nature, function, as well as relationships of components. Sometimes, they are necessitated to make quick decisions to save lives, thus, critical thinking is paramount during emergencies. Their inquisitiveness in the quest for knowledge through examination and questioning enable them to explore different situations and options, which can assist in enhancing outcomes. Nurses can learn all practical skills during their training, but lack of critical thinking can restrict them from making rational decisions.
