Various issues including historical, political, social, and economic trends have influenced today’s health care system. An example of an economic issue that has influenced the health care system includes the cost of health care. Increasing costs of health care have made health care to be a concern of the government. Increased population is one of the social issues that influenced health care system, as there was a need for improvement and expansion in the health sector in order to cater for the growing population. There has been emergence of many diseases over the past years that influenced the health care system in an attempt to develop solutions to deal with the diseases. Politically, the governments of almost all nations have been struggling to improve their countries health care systems, hence influencing today’s health care system (Kelly, 2012).
The process of evaluating the structure in health care is done through assessing the physical facility, human resources, equipment, and organizational characteristics e.g. staff training. The structure is important as it helps in measuring the quality of care in a system or facility. Process is evaluated through records pertaining to treatment, diagnosis, patient education, and preventive care. The process is important as it measures the quality of care in health centers. Outcome is evaluated by observing the healthcare’s effects on patients. these changes include the changes in health condition of patients, patients’ satisfaction etc. outcome is important as it is the most important measure of quality, reason being that the healthcare’s primary goal is to improve patients’ health status.
Technology has played a great role in the improvement of patients’ outcome in the field of healthcare. It has achieved this by providing safer and faster care through accessing the medical histories of patients, providing digitals solutions to patients’ problems, and reducing the costs of delivery. Technology has been very important in detection of some diseases e.g. breast cancer and diagnosis which is very essential in improving the outcomes of patients. The improvement involves three stages, which include the decision to adopt a certain technology, deployment of the technologies, and monitoring the use of the technologies (Kabene, 2010).
There are different ways to intervene in order to improve the quality of care and safety within the healthcare system, and at bed-side. These include changing the hospital processes, policies, procedures, systems, or structure. Another intervention would be through changing individual attitudes, knowledge, or skills through education, activating, informing and engaging persons.
Institute of Medicine launched an intensive effort that was aimed at improving and assessing the quality of care in the nation. To support the hallmarks of quality, the organization also urges healthcare organizations to reduce illness burden, disability and injury, to improve the health of the citizens (Kelly, 2012). The organization has achieved positive results in their efforts to improve the healthcare sector. It has for example heightened the weight of achieving excellent satisfaction of the customers, and positive outcomes of the patients. Through the organizations efforts, the consumer today is more informed, and the ability of the healthcare delivery systems to provide high quality health care has risen.
It has led to the improvement of facilities through the organization’s efforts. Many medical errors were being encountered in healthcare facilities some years back, but with the improvement and upgrading of the facilities the errors have been minimized (Kelly, 2012). Improvement in technology has led to improved communication, which in turn has led to improved healthcare. Through the use of mobile phones and short messages services, reminders and appointments are easily communicated to patients. Patients are also able to speak with their medics in cases where they may require assistance, without necessarily having to visit the healthcare facility (Kabene, 2010).
The purpose of National Patient Safety Goals is to improve on the safety of the patient. The goals focal point is the problems encountered in health care and ways of solving them. There exists a link between sentinel events and the NPSGs. Sentinel events are adverse events that are experienced in hospitals, and the joint commission developed a policy to improve the safety of hospitals experiencing them, and enable the hospitals to learn from them. The need to protect patients and to enhance their safety is the main driver of the implementation of the NPSGs in hospitals. ‘’Do Not Use’’ list is a list that was integrated in the standards of information management as an element of performance. The list is focused on patient safety as it enhances communication between medics and gives directions on the abbreviations that should not be used. To ensure that Erin adheres to the NPSGs, she should report any medical errors with immediate effect to enhance the safety of the patient.
