Ever since I was young, I had the dream of becoming one of the best nurses in our country. I focused on my dream by concentrating all my efforts on chemistry and biology subjects in high school. I graduated with high grades and made it to the reputable College of Mount Saint Vincent. This was the only step that I was to take in order to qualify as a nurse. I studied nursing from 9/2009 to 5/2014 at the College of Mount Saint Vincentand successfully graduated with my nursing degree (BSN). After college, I was privileged to get a job at the Woodhull hospital, in Brooklyn as an ICU nurse. The nursing program at the College of Mount Saint Vincent was highly competitive. However, the high standards did not deter me from graduating with a high grade. Currently, I am a mother of two but I have been able to balance my education and my job with my parenthood. I would wish to pursue a masters degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
My decision to pursue a masters degree at this college is based on various factors. First, the college provides quality education that is developed by highly professional lecturers. Not only are the lecturers educated on nursing matters, but they are also experienced as nursing practitioners. The experience I had as a student at the college was unforgettable. The classes were organized and the transition into the college’s programs was phenomenal. After weeks of soul searching and wide consultations, I have decided to apply for a chance to pursue a masters degree in the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
As a registered nurse, I have had an opportunity to work with nurses with different educational backgrounds. I also witnessed how nurses with advanced degrees operate. For instance, our nurse leader was focused, organized and keen on getting the best results for the patients. At the Woodhull hospital, I assisted in patient admission, therapy treatments, as well as patient care. I was also responsible for developing policies, care plans, as well as procedures for the ICU department. My wholehearted efforts led to ICU patient satisfaction, increased staff competence, cohesiveness among the nurses and increased patient care. Additionally, I also witnessed the ability of the leader nurse in improving efficiency, productivity and staff competence.
The Family Nurse Practitioner program will prepare me for a future role as a nurse leader with the skills to provide quality patient care. Moreover, as a parent and a guardian of my two children, I appreciate the challenges that families go through. Therefore, this program will provide me with the necessary skills required to give quality healthcare to whole families. Through my studies, as well as my experience as a nurse, I have learnt to be an excellent collaborator, a responsible nurse, a teacher and an individual with amazing critical thinking skills. My goal is to increase staff competency and improve the quality of patient care.
It is noteworthy that our country has very many nurses. However, we have very few family nurse practitioners. Therefore, this master’s degree will not only be of benefit to me but also to the society as a whole. The nursing profession is a more diversified profession than any other available today. The profession requires passion, a kind heart, and a sharp mind; all the characteristics that I possess. I believe that a good nurse must be trustworthy, humane, nimble on their feet, and conscientious. My supreme understanding of the science of health as well as my extraordinary ability to create interpersonal relationships with the patients makes me a perfect candidate for a masters degree in this wonderful yet humbling field.
Technological changes and advances have made the nursing as challenging as never before. As a dedicated nurse, I want to keep abreast of the changes and learn how I can increase my nursing knowledge. In addition to studying, I also enjoy imparting knowledge to fellow staff members. Therefore, my education will not only be beneficial to me but also to my fellow workmates. Even though I am currently employed, my education will not be affected. My current employer offers flexible working hours. Therefore, I can program myself to ensure that I attend my classes while I perform my duties as a mother as well as an employee.
In conclusion, I must say that nursing is my life, my passion as well as my future. The College of Mount Saint Vincent is the best place to pursue my advanced education due to the quality education that is offered at the college. By attending the Family Nurse Practitioner program, I will be able to advance my skills as a nurse and develop leadership skills that I can use to increase nurse competency and improve patient care. I kindly hope that I will be one of the candidates that will get a chance to study what I love most.
