Creative Writing Sample Paper on Changing Health Care Environment

The contemporary health care environment is guided by numerous policies and regulations enforced by government agencies, as well as other private institutions that handle health care issues. However, nurses usually encounter a number of challenges as they strive to offer quality care to patients with the changing health care environment. In particular, advanced practice nurses (APNs) have a vital role in ensuring that the patient needs, as well as community needs are met. To attain this, APNs have transformed themselves into leaders, educators, policymakers, as well as researchers, through advancing their education (DeNisco & Barker, 2013). Thus, APNs have become primary care providers in offering preventive care to patients, families, and community.

APNs role is crucial in augmenting physicians’ practice. Due to shortage of physicians in most health care facilities, APNs role has continued to grow since they have gained competence in attending aging patients who suffer from chronic conditions. APNs spend more time with patients than physicians given that they offer patient care, in addition to discussing treatment options with their patients (Yang & Meiners, 2014).  They are capable of diagnosing diseases, conduct tests, prescribe medications, make referrals, as well as counsel patients, without the directives from physicians. APNs have helped in saving health care costs, as they have assumed most duties that were initially allocated to physicians.

The main intention of executing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was to enhance access to health care services at an affordable rate. This includes how patients access physicians and nurses in their preferred health care facilities. The changing role of APNs has an implication on ACA because as the demand for health care services increases, so is the rise in primary care providers. Due to increase in access of health insurance, well-trained APNs are required to handle patients with numerous health conditions (Yang & Meiners, 2014).  ACA has contributed in preventive health care that promote quality care through enhancing the role of APNs. This implies that APNs play a significant role in attaining health priorities, as indicated in ACA, at an affordable cost by a large number of individuals (Lathrop & Hodnicki, 2014).
