Sample Essay on Symbolism of Snow

Symbolism of Snow

Winter is a season; a temporal period. In the story ‘Snow’ by Ann Beattie, the female narrator uses snow to symbolize a temporal period. When the chipmunk entered the house through a load of firewood brought in by her lover (Bailey 2001), it was lucky to find a place to hide considering it was cold outside. The chipmunk saw the house as snow that would soon clear and could not, therefore, offer permanent homage.

When the couple accidentally scrapes some paint off the wall, it reveals wall hangings of the previous occupants (Rainwater & Scheick 1985). One would expect to clear the room completely when moving out. However, the precious wall hangings of the previous occupants did not mean anything to them anymore; like the snow clears, the need for their hangings had cleared.

The friends visiting them told nice stories and hoped the couple would be together forever to be part of their storytelling. As time passed, even neighbors began to realize the two will not last together (Rainwater et al. 1985).

When the man missed his hat and wore a towel around his head, the narrator refers to him as the ‘king of the snow’ (Beattie 2011). Like the snow he was clearing around the house, him too would clear from her life.

Allen was a good friend who offered comfort to the narrator when things were not working with her lover (Werlock 2009). Like the snow, Allen was around for a season and had now cleared.

The narrator is sorry that all her life summarizes in one statement ‘growing up, falling in love and spending the winter with her lover in the country’ (Beattie 2011).There was more to her life than the breakup with her lover, but the effect has left her empty and made her forget all the good things in her life. People take long to prepare for winter that is temporal. The narrator likens her relationship to a winter that is finally over. Her love affair is the snow that has cleared.
