Sample Presentation Paper on International Relations

Select a topic (an international event/issue) which you will analyze using the concepts we’ll cover in this course.   Identify the event/issue and briefly explain what happened (or is happening), when, and where.   Analyze the event/issue by placing it in a geopolitical context, taking into consideration both global-regional and domestic factors, as well as social, economic, and cultural considerations.   Identify state and non-state actors involved.   Once you’ve identified the actors, use the theories of international relations to help you understand why this event/issue was important to each of them and why each responded as it did.   The impact of balance of power, globalization, economics, culture, politics, and many other factors will help you analyze your topic.

Your abstract serves as the basis for your final paper or presentation and should contain a title page, a 1 – 2 page abstract explaining the issue, the object of your research (what question did you set out to answer), your method, and your conclusions, followed by a 2 page outline for your paper or presentation, and a bibliography of your sources.   The abstract should be single-spaced, 12-point font of your choice (something easy to read please no cursive, scripts, or wacky fonts please) with one inch margins all around.   Please write in a clear, concise manner. Please do write in a natural way, but do not slip into informality or slang. Please do not try to dazzle your readers with fancy words. If you want to show how intelligent you are, please do so with the quality of your reasoning and not with important-sounding words. You will only confuse me.

Your abstract should contain an introductory paragraph which explains the topic or question asked, the approach you took to answering the question and the argument the paper or presentation will make AND a concluding paragraph which wraps up the main points without introducing any new information.   Please use a spell/grammar checker. Feel free to send me the paper prior to the turn-in date if you get stuck or want feedback to improve your paper and your grade.

Title pages should include the title of your paper, your name, the date, the course designator, and the instructor’s name – all centered on the front page.   Your bibliography will be the last page(s) of your paper and should provide a list of all sources, alphabetized by authors’ last names.   Each item should be single-spaced with a double-space between items.

Papers must use a minimum of 8 sources, with a minimum of two primary sources and two academic journals.   If you’re not sure about the difference between primary and secondary sources, All sources must be scholarly sources.   Restrict your sources to newspaper articles from major national and international papers (use these sparingly as they tend to be biased and are not often written by experts in the field), published journals and magazine articles, and websites from major organizations and government agencies.   Encyclopedias and textbooks may be referenced minimally in your paper, but do not count toward the minimum number of sources.

All work must be original.   Do not use a paper submitted in another course and beware of copy/pasting from online sources, which is plagiarism.   Papers will be submitted to turnitin.com during the grading process (to check for plagiarism).   Please review the How to Avoid Plagiarism Tutorial carefully and make sure you understand how to cite your sources.   Note that this means any facts or ideas you gleaned from your research need to be cited.   A lack of citations indicates that you are claiming the ideas are your own.
