Sample Essay on Developing a Personal Mission Statement and Leadership Self-Development Plan

  1. Personal Mission Statement

Every individual who aspires to succeed in life must make adequate preparation on how to attain personal goals. My purpose in life is to leave a mark that would be remembered for many years to come. I aspire to assist other people to realize their potential, thus, I am devoted to study hard in order to attain the knowledge prerequisite in making the difference in other people’s lives. My personal mission is to be passionate in transforming behaviors that hinder individuals from realizing their potential. Studying Human Resource in college has helped in laying the foundation of my career goal. Human resources involve hiring and training employees to enhance their productivity, in addition to assisting them achieve their personal goals. I always prefer to lead others, even in our home, and this has enabled me to learn how to motivate others to realize their potentials.

The quest to make a change in our country, as well as in the globe has not changed, since I know everything is possible when one is committed to his/her goals. I have been able to reflect about my past, and the progress that I have made this far has made me prove that attaining my future career would be possible in the next twelve or fifteen years. The support that I have from my parents has motivated me to work hard  and to remain focused on the ultimate goal. I have chosen to involve many people in my life to avoid concentrating on only what I want, rather than what the society requires from me. To accomplish personal mission requires involvement of activities that have a positive impact on other people’s lives (Del, 2013). This is because missions are perceived as cause-based, with intent to transform people’s lifestyles.

My ultimate professional goal is to become a health care or a hospitality CEO in the future, and my dream is to work in an international company, preferably in Anthem, or Marroit. The CEO is the overall manager, who is responsible for all decision makings in the organization. The CEO is a role model to other employees, thus, being tolerant and sociable is vital for running an organization. I know that the journey to a successful career is quite rough and challenging, but I am committed to attain my goals through the family support, as well as other professionals who have undergone the same course.

Building a career is a complex process that requires time, persistence, and consultations. Although I am still far from attaining my ultimate goal, I have been consulting my mentors and career guiders to ensure that I am on the right course. I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, and I am looking forward to getting my first job. I have strived to gain experience in the Human Resources through working as an intern in two companies during my holidays.  Furthermore, I have attended several workshops that were focusing on leadership in organizations. I would like to start my career as a Training and Development Specialist before rising in rank to become a Human Resource Manager.

My quest to make a change in the world is based on the values that I respect most, as well as the values that I give others. I know that life’s journey requires commitment and collaboration with others in order to move faster and effectively. The old adage, which states that an individual who does not know where he/she is going would end up in the wrong place, has motivated me to seek advice to people that I value most. Some of the values that I respect most in me include persistence, being hardworking, industrious, outgoing, and positive-minded. I also value my decision-making skills, analytical skills, and compassion.

Personal values are vital to individuals because they make them discover what actually work for them. I also value individuals who are devoted to their duties to make a difference in society. Such individuals demonstrate selfless in assisting other people to solve problems since selfless individuals do not enjoy seeing other people suffering. People who are open-minded, accountable, selfless, disciplined, and adventurous are easy to work with because they share the traits that I like in life. In addition, such people can assist others in attaining their goals. Although I prefer to work with people who have the same vision as mine, I am willing to transform people who may have different views. As a good leader, it is my duty to engage every individual in understanding the right path without creating conflict of interest.

Making the right decisions is one of the most appropriate ways of strengthening the individual’s value system. Being courageous and sociable can assist in nurturing my career in mentoring, as talking to other people can give an individual an idea on how to tackle certain issues in life. A good mentor needs to work with other people in order to evaluate his/her point of view and to enhance their potential. Developing a reading habit is vital in the development of leadership and mentoring traits, as reading enhances the individual’s capacity to think of numerous ways to solve problems.

Since my childhood, I liked listening to stories from my parents and other relatives. After listening to the story, I always inquired the meaning of the story, and sometimes I volunteered to give the meaning. I never feared asking questions, such as why we go to church or why babies cry hysterically. Thus, I enjoyed telling people stories, hoping that they would also ask the meaning of such stories. Besides being a good listener, I also enjoy reading books, regardless of topics. Whenever  I felt stressed, I turned into books, which would transform negative thinking into positive ideas. Real progress happens when an individual is relaxed, rather than when one is stressed (Del, 2013). I discovered that books can help individuals to sharpen their mind and solve other people’s problems.

Individuals who are focused and diligent in their actions are capable of transforming their talents into careers. My talent in telling stories that have deeper meanings can help me to become a leader and a mentor. I have held leadership position where I was involved in mentoring and directing students, both in college and in high school. However, to succeed in mentoring employees in big companies, I need to raise my personal standards. This implies that I need to be cautious with regard to things that I do, as well as remain positive in every activity.  As a professional in human resources, I am necessitated to establish and maintain boundaries to avoid meddling with other people’s personal lives.

Making a remarkable change in human resource will require an effort in changing people’s perceptions. Thus, the most appropriate area that I need to make an impact is in mentoring. Mentoring is an influential instrument for empowerment, as well as for personal development. Mentoring is typically based on shared trust and reverence between the mentor and the individual who is being mentored. Besides personal development, individuals who are mentored are likely to remain focused on their responsibility, thus, assisting organizations to improve on productivity. My contribution would be felt during training and development of employees, where I would be involved in highlighting tactics for remaining focused even when an individual is experiencing personal issues.
