FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS

Organization of the Paper

Page numbers given are rough estimates and are not a graded criterion. Please refer to the detailed descriptions of each section and be sure to include all requested information.

Headings

The headings of the template should be used for the headings of your paper. While you may add additional headings, you must include all of those presented in the template.  Additional headings added will be at different levels and indented as shown in APA Style 7.

 Page Layout and Font

Font: Times Roman 12 pt Margins: 1-inch all around, double space for all aspects

Hints: It is anticipated in completing this assignment that you will have received prior training and experience in clinical interviewing, assessment, and writing. The CFI is intended to be used to supplement a standard diagnostic assessment; therefore, the write-up for this assignment should mirror the style of a clinical assessment. Please be as thorough as possible for each section, however, page length is not a graded criterion.

Scoring: For example, “Your reaction and that of your client” is worth 20 points and should therefore contain multiple reactions of yourself and your client to achieve maximum points

I found that the CFI is asking how an individual views his/her problems. So does it mean that the person I interview has to have some mental issues or experiences some types of stressors?

Yes, the person interviewed has to have some mental issues or experiences some types of stressors that they can use to answer all your questions. A diagnosis is not required.

Reminder that there is no strict page length requirement. Professional writing. Use a pseudonym for the client – don’t use the word ‘client’ throughout the paper. Likewise, you may use first person. In section one you may use bullet points.

Do I need references?

No. The Client Background and Cultural Formulation Interview sections should have no analysis or reflection. Stick to addressing each question.

Do I have to use the template?

Please use the headings provided on the template. Replace lines in red with your own specific information.

For the client’s reaction (section five) it’s best to directly ask the client at the end of the session what they liked and didn’t like. Lastly, it’s ok if you don’t like the CFI – provide specific examples of support.

Tips

The CFI is intended as a guide to cultural assessment and should be used flexibly to maintain a natural flow of the interview and rapport with the individual. Follow-up questions may be needed to clarify individuals’ answers. Questions may be rephrased as needed.
