Sample Nursing Essay Assignment on Professional Development Plan

Length: approx. 10 pages-this is usually adequate for this assignment. One-half of the paper should be devoted to your leadership goals and the other one-half should cover your personal and professional goals.

Format: APA format (grammar, spacing, headings, in-text citations,  etc); the title page and reference page are not included in total number of pages. Use headings from the assignment instructions.

SMART goals: Goals should be related to developing your leadership skills and qualities. Be specific in skills, attitudes, and qualities related to leadership.

Part I: Prepare & Plan (2 hours)

Develop a professional development plan for yourself which includes both leadership and professional growth in the areas of professionalism, commitment to life- long learning, professional self-care, and involvement in professional organizations, etc.

In Module 1, read about complexity science and the challenges nurses faced in providing care in an increasingly complex environment.  The IOM Future of Nursing Report (2010) calls for nurses developing leadership skills to advance and improve healthcare in our nation.  Reflect on your future professional plans.  Where do you see yourself in 15-20 years or even after completion of this MSN?  Take some leadership online assessments (suggested ones listed below).  Look at your personal results of those assessments. What are your strengths? Areas for improvement? As you work your way through the rubric address the issues you need to work on to achieve your future goals.  These are not brief one-line paragraphs but a “growth” and development plan about you and plan written for you.

Part II:  Develop (4 hours)

Leadership Assessments can be found online on multiple sites.  You may even have taken an assessment at work or another program.  You may use those results if they are recent (in the last 12 months) and if you have access to the results.  You may use the ones listed here or others you may find.  Be sure and include the name of the assessment, when you took it and a link to it online or location found.  It should also be listed on your reference list.

Part III: Action (6 hours)

After completing part 1 and 2 finalize your Professional Develop Plan.  Ensure completeness by reviewing the rubric carefully making sure your paper thoroughly addresses each section of the rubric.

·        Write your development plan for the next 10-15 years of your career.

·        Paper should be a minimum of 10 pages in APA format with in-text citations and a reference list.  Keep the plan balanced between your Leadership Skills and your Personal Skills Development.  These are the two categories in the rubric.

·        You may include tables or graphic displays to make your plan interesting for the reader, but these do not count toward your ten written pages.

·        Include a reference list with appropriate in-text citations.
