Using two pages to answer each question set. (two question sets total)
1.
A. Race inequality: (1) describe how whites, Blacks, and Latinos differ in income and in wealth (be sure to provide statistics); (2) lay out 2 main and significantly different ways in which race leads to differences of experience and treatment in education.
B. Class inequality: (1) describe the degree of income and wealth inequality in the US (be sure to provide statistics), (2) compare it to income and wealth inequality in other societies; (3) lay out two main reasons class inequality has been rising.
C. Theories of education 1: Drawing on Dougherty & Hammack and the supplementary readings by Goslin and Carnoy on functionalist and Marxist class-reproduction theory, contrast the functionalist and Marxist class-reproduction positions on (1) the social role of education; (2) the nature of society. Ignore the Marxist class-conflict approach.
D. Theories of education 2 (choose one; label it as d1 or d2 or d3)
Marxism vs. Marxism: Drawing on Dougherty & Hammack, describe and then contrast the Marxist class-reproduction and the Marxist class-conflict positions on (a) the social role of education; (b) the nature of society.
Use the first two pages to answer the above questions, only use sources provided in the questions. (use Dougherty&hammack and Carnoy for the first two pages’ answers.)
2. Obstacles to High School to Higher Education (HS-HE) Transition:
A. Expectations: Drawing on Perna and Kurban, Lareau, and Bourdieu and related readings like Dougherty & Hammack or Carnoy, discuss how differences in educational expectations produce class and race differences in college access and destination. To do this, explain (1) why there are class and race differences on average in educational expectations (give 2 reasons); (2) how having higher vs. lower educational expectations affects college access and choice (give 2 reasons). In all cases, use the readings and available statistics to back up your points. Make sure the reasons you give are distinctly different.
B. Information: Drawing on all the readings for this week and related readings in other weeks, discuss how differences in the amount and quality of information produce class and race differences in college access and destination. To do this, explain (1) why there are class and race differences on average in the amount and quality of information about education (give 2 reasons); (2) how having better vs. poorer information affects college access and choice (give 2 reasons). In all cases, use the readings and available statistics to back up your points. Make sure the reasons you give are distinctly different.
C. Academic preparation: Drawing on all the readings for this week and related readings in other weeks, discuss how differences in academic preparation produce class and race differences in college access and destination. To do this, explain (1) why there are class and race differences on average in academic preparation (give 2 reasons); and (2) how having better vs. lesser academic preparation affects college access and choice (give 2 reasons). In all cases, use the readings and available statistics to back up your points. Make sure the reasons you give are distinctly different.
D. Drawing on the all the readings, give 3 important and distinctly different societal, institutional, community, or personal/familial aspects of the college access and choice process that Perna & Kurban either fail to address or, if they do mention them, analyze them inadequately. For each aspect in turn, first describe this missing/misanalyzed aspect in some detail and then discuss where each would fit in P & K’s four layers (running from student/family to broader social/economic/political).
Use four single-spaced pages to answer each of the above question sets. Times New Roman 12, 1” margin on all sides. Be sure to answer the questions completely and read them very carefully and in the exact form they are laid out. Do not combine answers to different subsections, because this may lead to not covering a certain point. Do NOT state the same points in different parts of a question, this may well indicate a misunderstanding of the question.
Make sure to put in the section numbers as go along, and indicate precisely what part of the question you are answering. Begin each question on a new page (2 question total. label 1A, 2B, etc for subsections). Do not quote exact words, when citing the source, cite names and pages.
