Analysis of Supervisor Job Descriptions

Job supervisors are crucial in every organization as they play a significant role in ensuring efficiency regarding quality and resources. Supervisors are more involved in controlling work rather than performing the work directly. In every organization, a supervisor’s goal is to set performance standards and how they set it depends on the organizations and the responsibility of the supervisor. This paper will discuss an analysis of graphic design supervisor, fiber optics supervisor, and mechanical engineer supervisor job descriptions.

An analysis of the three job descriptions will be done to determine the main difference between the job descriptions even though the jobs are in different fields. The first job description is the graphic design supervisor job description as described at www.monster.com. The analysis will cover the job description of a supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express. The second description is the fiber optics supervisor job description as described at www.ziprecruter.com. The report is based on the requirements of the company E2 optics. E2 optics are interested in a lead member and senior technical leader to head a team. The last job description is the mechanical engineer supervisor job description as described at www.careerbuilder.com. Alliance Laundry Systems are interested in mechanical engineer supervisor who will be involved in the organization’s Product Development Process.

Job Responsibilities

The job descriptions of the three job descriptions vary as the jobs are from a different field each. However, since the descriptions are for the same job position, they differ in some respects. A graphic design supervisor is required to evaluate the workflow of custom printed orders and the quality of orders and employee productivity and conduct performance improvement if it is necessary. A fiber optics supervisor is required to validate the project plan and scope of work and evaluate the project by implementing strategies aimed at improving the team’s performance and ensuring all work is performed according to the set standards. The main aim of evaluation and validation is to ensure the final product is up to industry standards. A mechanical engineer supervisor is required to manage and estimate resources for projects are done as planned. Managing resources involve activities such as establishing priorities, estimating time, workforce planning, estimating costs, among other activities.

Each supervisor in the three positions works with different people. For instance, the graphic design supervisor is required to work with designers, employees, and bosses from other departments, and the customer (“Graphic Design Supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express”).

The fiber optics supervisor is required to work with the project manager in the implementation of work activities and maintain a project schedule. Also, the fiber optics supervisor is required to work with and mentor all technicians, installers, and team leaders to help them improve their responsibilities and work (“Field Supervisor Job”). The mechanical engineer supervisor is required to work with the manufacturing department to ensure designs ensure efficiently during manufacturing and those who will be assigned to his or her team (“Mechanical Engineering Supervisor”).

Each supervisor has different tasks to perform as required by the each of the three organizations. A graphic design supervisor tasks include; supervise designers on the second shift, edit timecards, perform administrative tasks such as approving time off, give employees verbal or written warnings when issues arise, provide and review feedback, execute performance improvement plans, and perform assignments when needed (“Graphic Design Supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express”). The fiber optics supervisor tasks include; handling all technical infrastructure-related tasks, interpret all specifications, plans, and drawings, set different types of equipment, supervise the work to ensure it is done according to company and industry standards, perform technical activities such as troubleshooting, testing, splicing, and termination (“Field Supervisor Job”). Lastly, tasks for the mechanical engineer supervisor’s tasks include; defining the project, tracking progress, managing budgets, resolving issues, planning schedules, coach and supervise the team. The tasks also include engaging in the product development process which includes activities such as performance testing, prototyping, and design creation, development and design mechanical subsystems, troubleshoot design problems, establish guidelines and standards for vendor selection and supplier evaluation, and deliver products to the market (“Mechanical Engineering Supervisor”).

Each job has unique responsibilities of the supervisor. Even though the role of the supervisor is to oversee the graphic design supervisor is involved in the actual work. The graphic design supervisor is required to assist in design tasks, update the blog, work with the production team, and work with other departments to complete an order. Besides supervising, the fiber optics supervisor is required to work with the installer, technician, and team members. Besides supervising, the mechanical engineer supervisor is required to participate in team meetings, conduct benchmarking, and hold meetings with external suppliers.

Each organization requires the supervisor to behave in a specific way. The job descriptions of the companies describe how the supervisor is expected to act. Stahl’s Transfer Express always requires the graphic design supervisor to be professional.

 E2 optics needs the fiber optics supervisor to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance and lead by example in work and safety practices. Alliance Laundry Systems require the mechanical engineer supervisor to communicate effectively in the workplace. Since the fiber optics supervisor at E2 optics is needed to work in the field, one of the company’s responsibilities is the ideal individual must abide by the set travel requirements. The ideal individual must agree to travel mostly at night and to different towns overnight.

Position Requirements

Each of the three organizations requires the supervisor to have different skills. The skills and abilities requirements for Stahl’s Transfer Express are minimal. The organization expects the candidate to have attention to detail, have strong computer skills, understand the application Adobe Illustrator, and understand supervisory principles and practices. Stahl’s Transfer Express prefers candidates who know Corel Draw 11 and above (“Graphic Design Supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express”). E2 optics require the ideal candidate to be knowledgeable in every aspect of structured cabling system, industry codes, and industry best practices. Also, the supervisor must be a team player, have a positive attitude, be able to follow instructions, and eager to learn from the superiors. E2 optics job description is unique as the company has listed bonus attributes of the ideal candidate. The bonus attributes for the ideal candidate are manufacturer’s certification, have in-house certified training, show compliance of customer security requirements, be a BISCI Level 2 technician or installer, and be a CAPM certified associate (“Field Supervisor Job”).

Alliance Laundry Systems have some requirements for the candidate. The organization requires the candidate to have at least six years’ experience in product design engineering, have managed a project for not less than two years, experience in value engineering, supervisory experience, and assembly and manufacturing experience. Also, the candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the process and quality improvement, geometric tolerances and dimensions, and designing some products such as die-cast aluminum, molded rubber, stamped metal sheet, and molded plastic.  Alliance Laundry Systems require the supervisor to demonstrate a good knowledge of computer and computer applications and have excellent oral and written communication skills (“Mechanical Engineering Supervisor”).

Stahl’s Transfer Express and E2 optics have no physical requirements for the supervisor. However, Alliance Laundry System’s physical requirements include five percent domestic and international travel, and someone who has no problem standing and sitting for long periods and stooping, bending, and slight lifting.

Education Requirements

For each organization, the ideal candidate must meet the set education requirements. Stahl’s Transfer Express set the education requirements for the graphic design supervisor an associate degree in graphic design or equivalent work experience which is not a requirement (“Graphic Design Supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express”). E2 optics education requirements for the fiber optics supervisor are low as only a GED or high school diploma is required. The ideal candidate must be able to read, write, and distinguish color codes, and must have a minimum working experience of 3 to 6 years working in the structured cabling field or similar industry (“Field Supervisor Job”). Alliance Laundry Systems prefer a candidate with a master’s degree, but the candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (“Mechanical Engineering Supervisor”).

Conclusions

The job descriptions for each company are tailored differently, and a thorough analysis shows the descriptions are more focused on specific aspects. Stahl’s Transfer Express job description shows the company is more interested in customer appeal. Stahl’s Transfer Express is a manufacturing company that is focused on creating the best products for the customers. The job description shows the company is interested in remaining competitive by employing the best talent in the market. Thus, the job description shows the company is more interested in customer appeal. For instance, the job requirements show the company wants to hire an experienced individual who will conduct performance improvement plan, engage in the tasks with other employees if necessary, and improve the current designs to ensure quality work, and review and provide feedback customers’ orders (“Graphic Design Supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express”).

E2 optics’ job description for the fiber optics supervisor position shows that the company is more interested in employee productivity. The job description describes a position for a field fiber optic supervisor. The requirements and duties show the company is more interested in employee productivity. For instance, the job description is more focused on the employee’s ability to perform specific tasks on the field that why the company requires the workers to show professionalism and safety in the workplace and meet the traveling requirements. E2 optics are structured in a manner that ensures the supervisor is competent. The description states that the ideal candidate to be knowledgeable in every aspect of structured cabling system, industry codes, and industry best practices.

 In addition, the supervisor must be a team player, have a positive attitude, be able to follow instructions, and eager to learn from the superiors (“Field Supervisor Job”).

E2 optics is more focused on employee productivity as the job involves the employees working in the field where their requirements are different from those of working in an office. E2 optics job description describes the physical demand and the work environment to help the applicant understand the nature of the work. For example, the descriptions state that the employee will be working a construction environment where the employee will be required to sit, walk, and climb a ladder, stoop, and occasionally lift between 25 and 50 pounds (“Field Supervisor Job”).

Alliance Laundry Systems job description for a mechanical engineer supervisor shows the company is focused on technical aspects of the job and the applicant. For instance, the overview of the job description states that the supervisor’s efforts will be directed towards implementation, testing, and design of mechanical designs. Also, the education requirements state that a candidate with a master’s degree, but the candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. The position requirements show the organization requires the candidate to have at least six years’ experience in product design engineering, have managed a project for not less than two years, experience in value engineering, supervisory experience, and assembly and manufacturing experience. From the job descriptions, one can conclude that experience is as necessary as formal skills and training. This conclusion is since all the companies require the supervisor to have experience in their specific field, but the education qualifications can vary. For non-technical tasks and job, such as fiber optic supervision, higher learning qualification is not important, while in technical jobs formal training and higher education are a must. E2 Optics require the candidate to have a GED or high school diploma, while Alliance Laundry Systems require the candidate to have either a bachelors or master’s degree and Stahl’s Transfer Express a degree in graphic design.

Fiber Optics Supervisor Challenges

Seeking and applying for the right job can be a challenge, especially when the job description is not succinct and clear in some areas. The three unique job descriptions show the today’s job

descriptions do not focus on specific skills such as people skills, how to handle workplace stress, and how to handle physical challenges.

 The fiber optics supervisor job description by E2 Optics paint a clear picture of the physical challenges and stress of a job, but the company fails to state how the employee will manage the problems and stress of the job. Today’s supervisors are affected by the challenges and demands of the workplace environment. The field fiber optics supervisor description describes the huge demands for those who work in the field. The job description details how the employee will be working a construction environment where the employee will be required to sit, walk, and climb a ladder, stoop, and occasionally lift between 25 and 50 pounds (“Field Supervisor Job”).

The description details the challenges of the supervisory job but fails to show how the employee will manage the challenges and stress. In today’s workplace, stress management is important to increase productivity and reduce chances of issues occurring. Stress management is important for supervisors as it affects their work directly. The work is of a supervisor is to set performance standards, manage employees, coach team members, and monitor productivity (Shaw et al. 132). The lack of stress management inhibits a supervisor’s ability to perform their duty effectively. For instance, stress will affect the supervisor’s ability to lead, coach team members, motivate employees, and improve productivity. This affects the supervisor when applying for jobs and carrying out his or her daily duties. Lack of stress management in today’s competitive and demanding work environment may lead to low productivity among supervisors, which in turn is reflected in the employees.

Graphic Design

The management position of graphic design supervisor poses a noteworthy challenge for today’s supervisors. It is of note that the supervisory position overlooks the value of the supervisor in employee training and retention. In its job description, Stahl Transfer Express notes that the graphic design supervisor will be responsible for managing the 2nd shift team in the firm. It proceeds to note that this will be the prime role of the eligible candidate to ensure that he or she translates the vision of the client into graphic design (“Graphic Design Supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express”). However, the responsibilities required to achieve this objective do not provide or hint at any training strategies that the graphic design supervisor might utilize to meet the needs of the clients. Under the conditions of the job description, this ambiguity might be problematic for today’s supervisors since it might inhibit their ability to translate the customer requests into desired outcomes.

According to Park et al. (58), supervisor involvement in employee training plays a vital role in the readiness of subordinates to learn. Therefore, it is plausible to argue that since graphic design is a dynamic profession, the lack of supervisor support for training might inhibit the readiness of employees to learn.

Beyond training, the job description fails to consider the importance of the graphic design supervisor’s in employee retention. It employs a harsh tone towards the supervisor’s treatment of team members. For instance, it notes that one of the primary responsibilities that the supervisor ought to assume will be to prepare verbal and written warnings for subordinates (“Graphic Design Supervisor at Stahl’s Transfer Express”). Nonetheless, it fails to explain the role of graphic design supervisor in motivating and retaining employees.  Instead, it focuses solely on the supervisor’s overall tasks and commitment to customer needs. In practice, this issue might be problematic for today’s supervisors who encounter the constant need to motivate and retain their subordinates. (Mathieu et al. 127) found that employee turnover intentions are contingent upon a person-oriented supervisory behavior. It closely follows employees are more likely to exhibit an organizational commitment and job satisfaction when the supervisors use person-oriented leadership behavior than when they are more task-oriented (Mathieu et al.127). By using Stahl’s Transfer Express job description, today’s supervisors might focus more on the task-oriented leadership behavior to the detriment of the team’s organizational commitment and job satisfaction. 

 

Mechanical Engineer

The mechanical engineering job description shows today’s supervisors must have some qualifications and higher education to qualify for the job in their ideal organization. Alliance Laundry Systems require a candidate with a manufacturer’s certification, has an in-house certification training, show compliance of customer security requirements, be a BISCI Level 2 technician or installer, and be a CAPM certified associate, besides having a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
