2. What is one difference between classical and medieval cities?

Classical cities and medieval cities were similar to each other in a lot of ways. At the same time, they were also different in just as many ways as well, and although there are many differences that vary, there is one main difference that truly separated classical cities from medieval cities. Due to reasons that are economical, legal, and political, medieval cities were much more advanced, and it’s that advancement that made them last longer and more successful, so much so that quite plenty of them have managed to manifest into modern day cities. According to Mark Gottdiener, Randolph Hohle, and Colby King, “The medieval urban community consisted of three elements: 1) a fusion of the fortress and the marketplace where trade and commercial relations predominated; 2) a legal court of its own that had the authority to settle local disputes; and 3) a partial political autonomy that allowed residents to elect authorities who could administer daily affairs (Weber, 1966)” (The New Urban Sociology, pg. 36). When medieval cities first came into place, that’s when the definition and constituents of a city changed.

4. How did the Chicago School neglect the role of capitalism and the role of government in urban development? That is, use the sociospatial perspective to critique them.

In a traditional sense, urbanization is associated with the profit-over-people system known as capitalism, and is also influenced by the government, but after seeing how they could very much affect them in the long run, the Chicago School decided to ditch the role of capitalism and the government. This is because they knew that giving in to the roles would mean having decisions and the individual people having their own original incentives would be controlled by capitalism and the government. This shows that the Chicago School valued freedom and independence, and saw it as the best way to progress into their betterment. According to Mark Gottdiener, Randolph Hohle, and Colby King, “Whereas European thinkers such as Weber, Marx, and Simmel viewed the city as an environment where larger social and economic forces of capitalism played themselves out in a human drama, Chicago School sociologists avoided the study of capitalism per se, preferring instead a biologically based way of conceptualizing urban life” (The New Urban Sociology, pg. 55). Clearly, the Chicago School trusted the ways of using human nature to guide them through the whole process of urbanization, especially since they were aware of the many flaws that came with capitalism
