Course Description
This course examines the theory and practice of developing and managing innovations in start-ups and
in already established firms. Students have the opportunity to apply frameworks, strategies, business
models, idea generation techniques, and funding methods for introducing new products and services.
The course examines such topics as the creative process, the formulation of a business plan, and the
execution of the plan itself.

o One (1) academic credit requires 50 minutes per week of classroom or faculty
instruction and about two hours of out-of-class student work for a 15-week course; 100
minutes per week of classroom or direct faculty instruction and about 3.5 hours of outof-class student work for a 7.5-week course.
o For a three-credit course, students should expect 2.5 hours per week of classroom or
faculty instruction and a minimum of 5 hours of out-of-class student work for a 15-week
course; 5 hours of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of 10 hours of
out-of-class student work for a 7.5-week course.
o APA formatting is to be used in all written assignments.

COURSE THEMES/FOCI:
1. Develop skills in opportunity seeking, customer identification and development, business models
and planning. THESE ARE EMPHASIZED in the course learning as the foundational skills for ANY new
product, service, line of business or new business entity.
2. Case studies: there are short cases with each chapter. In the first third of the course, students will
complete on major case study – possibly “961 Beer”. In the second two-thirds will work on their own
business plan.
