Ethics Assignment on Mill and Kant: Consequentialism v. Deontology

Mill and Kant: Consequentialism v. Deontology
As we saw in class, both Mill and Kant paint two very different pictures of morality and what constitutes moral action. While one theory focuses on the consequence of an action, the other emphasizes the importance of motive. For Utilitarianism be sure to discuss “the greatest happiness principle” and the relationship between the individual and the collective. For Deontology be sure to discuss why morality is a struggle and the relationship between duty, law, and maxim. Lastly, after you’ve spelled out each ethical theory spend a paragraph and make clear in your own words how the two theories differ– specifically use the example of lying, what would each philosopher say?
