Diversity through Female Leadership and Obtaining Citizenship in the Army

Team Project

The final paper is an APA-formatted, six to eight-page paper (and a four to five-slide PowerPoint presentation) that incorporates the lessons learned from the textbook, weekly lectures, discussion questions, and other assignments. To create this, you will work within your team to create a comprehensive diversity training program to present to an organization in an effort to train and develop management and employees to create or sustain a diverse workplace.

Diversity has many benefits, primarily centered around the diverse and unique perspectives that employees with different backgrounds bring an organization. When organizations are looking to create products and services that are different, having a diverse workforce is central to that ambition. Some employees are unaware of the benefits of diversity, the strategies that can produce a diverse workplace, and norms and cultures that facilitate an open and inclusive workplace. This team assignment is intended to create a training and development program that will assist an organization in becoming a diverse organization.

Step 1: Select an organization that will be the focus of your study. The organization may be an organization from one of your team members, a previously worked organization, or an organization that your team is interested in studying. Importantly, choose an organization that is currently challenged to create or sustain an inclusive workplace. You may choose a police department, a governmental agency, a small business, or a Fortune 500 company. Search widely, however, to choose a company that can benefit from your team’s research.
Step 2: Research the company and determine its challenges related to creating a diverse workforce. In other words, identify the barriers or challenges that may preclude efforts to create an inclusive culture. This research is critical to identifying those issues that must be addressed and resolved to create the type of organization most beneficial to its employees.
Step 3: Identify two strategies that can be utilized and implemented to encourage a more diverse applicant pool to apply for organizational positions. These strategies should result in a more diverse workforce, one that encourages the hiring and retention of those with different backgrounds, perspectives, opinions, etc. Note: Accomplishing this objective is broader than the human resources department broadening its hiring practices; instead, strategies must be identified to engage employees to promote a more diverse workplace throughout the community.
Step 4: Identify two strategies that would change the culture of the organization to one that stresses inclusion and a strong sense of teamwork. Hiring a diverse workforce is insufficient if the organizational culture is intolerant of different perspectives and opinions. Therefore, the strategies in Step 4 should change the organizational culture and promote a welcoming and inviting tone to new and existing employees who may think and act differently.
Step 5: Now that you have developed the strategies to promote and sustain diversity in the workplace, Step 5 requires the team to develop a training and development program that will institutionalize these new strategies into the workplace. In addition to the Final Team Paper, the team will prepare a 4-5 slide PowerPoint presentation that highlights the training and development program for the organization. The team should determine how employees will be trained (video, PowerPoint, meetings), how frequently the training will occur, the objectives of the training, and who will perform the training.
Step 6: The final step is to evaluate the success of the proposed training and development program. Once the objectives of the program are determined, the team can develop an evaluation tool to determine its success. In this step, state how you would assess the success of this program, including any metrics or statistics utilized that will attest to its success. Be specific about the tools and methods used to assess the program, how frequently the evaluation should occur, and who has the responsibility to perform the assessment.
