Synthesis Exercise (take-home)

This synthesis exercise will serve to demonstrate that you understand the ideas behind synthesis and how to compose typical synthesis arguments using outside sources.

A typical synthesis paragraph/argument will include three main points:

  • A topic sentence (presenting an argument in support of the paper’s thesis)
  • Supporting evidence from at least two outside sources, and (usually)
  • Explanation/analysis of how and why the evidence supports the topic sentence

Consider the following passages from two sources:

  1. The following is a quote from paragraph 17 (p. 70) of “The Culture of Liberty,” by Mario Vargas Llosa: “During the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, regional cultures were repressed and condemned to a clandestine existence. But with the return of democracy, Spain’s rich cultural diversity was unleashed and allowed to develop freely.”
  2. The following quote is from page 32 of “In Defense of Globalization,” by Philippe Legrain: “New hybrid cultures are emerging. In ‘Amexica’ people speak Spanglish. Regional cultures are reviving. The Scots and Welsh break with British monoculture. Estonia is reborn from the Soviet Union. Voices that were silent dare to speak again.”

Now read the following synthesis. Note how the first sentence weaves the sources together into a new formulation:

The fear has been expressed that local cultures will be crushed underfoot by the advance of North American culture; the truth is that, not only are local cultures thriving under globalization, many are experiencing a revival. For example, Scotland and Wales are said to be emerging from underneath the shadow of England, while former Soviet satellite nations such as Estonia are weaning themselves from Mother Russia (Legrain 32). No less an authority than Nobel Prize-winning novelist Mario Vargas Llosa has said that local cultures that were once ground down by the Fascists in Spain are now experiencing a renaissance: “[W]ith the return of democracy, Spain’s rich cultural diversity was unleashed and allowed to develop freely” (par. 17). The arrival of Mickey Mouse and Coca Cola has done little to stem this tide.

Your assignment: Use two “chunks” of information, from any two sources that you tentatively plan to use in your research paper, to write a synthesis paragraph that argues a single point. Make your point in a topic sentence and develop it with supporting evidence from your sources. [If these are non-database sources, include a copy of the relevant pages from each source—these need to be properly labeled.] Don’t forget to frame, in a signal phrase and parenthetical note, the material from each source (see example above). Your response needs to be typed and in proper paragraph form. It should be 4-6 sentences long (120-150 words). The exercise is due on Tuesday, April 3. N.B.
