Best Practices Healthcare Educators Use During Coronavirus Pandemic to Increase Learning Outcomes

The research question drives everything!

A few questions about alignment have come up in regards to the Results, table 2, text, and Discussion sections.

  • What is the best way to list out the emerging themes to align the Results section to the Discussion section?
  • Which theme do I mention first in the Results section, table 2, and the text?

Let’s look at how to order and align the themes that make sense in the Results and the Discussion section.

Keeping the research question in mind, and listing the emerging themes in the Results section, the following is one method I like to use:

The Research Question:

  • Does the use of telemedicine, wearables, and AI to supplement physician-staffing shortages in rural areas increase patient-provider connectivity, and help sustain patient’s residency?

Using highlights below, I will explain below how a student may list out the emerging themes that transpire from the analysis conducted on the final academic articles (Noted in the Methods section) that relate to the research question.

Let us take an example:

The five themes that emerged from the systematic literature analysis of the final articles included:

  1. Telemedicine in rural healthcare
  2. Wearables in healthcare
  3. Artificial Intelligence in rural healthcare
  4. Physician shortage in rural areas
  5. Internet Connectivity.

Notice how the emerging themes related back to the Research Question below:

  • Does the use of (1) telemedicine, (2) wearables, and (3) AI to supplement (4) physician-staffing shortages in rural areas increase (5) patient-provider connectivity, and help sustain patient’s residency?

We can then order the following themes in Table 2 Frequency of occurrence in the literature, as follows:  (1), (2), (3), (4), and (5).

Table 2

Theme 2: Wearables in healthcare

Theme 3: Artificial Intelligence in rural healthcare

Theme 4: Physician shortage in rural areas

Theme 5: Internet Connectivity

A student may state the results in the text in the same order as Table 2, theme (1), (2), (3), 4), and (5).

For example, the order would follow as:

Results listed:

Sentence 1: Theme One, telemedicine in rural healthcare

Sentence 2: Theme Two, wearables in healthcare

Sentence 3: Theme Three, Artificial Intelligence in rural healthcare

Sentence 4: Theme Four, physician shortage in rural areas

Sentence 5: Theme Five, Internet Connectivity

Moving onto the Discussion Section:

In the upcoming Discussion section, a student may organize (each point) that you want to make under each theme taken from the results section, using the same order:

Paragraph 1: Theme One, telemedicine in rural healthcare

Introduce theme one, telemedicine in rural healthcare, using the M.E.A.L plan – Then you will discuss, (theme one), and what you found in the articles that can help answer your research question.

    • Point 1- what you found in the articles can help answer your research question.
    • Point 2
    • Point 3
    • Point 4, etc. sum up what the paragraph discussed and then preview what is coming in the next paragraph (theme two).

Paragraph 2: Theme Two, wearables in healthcare,

Introduce theme one, wearables in healthcare,, using the M.E.A.L plan – Then you will discuss (theme one), and what you found in the articles that can help answer your research question.

  • Point 1- what you found in the articles can help answer your research question.
  • Point 2
  • Point 3
  • Point 4, etc. – sum up what the paragraph discussed and then preview what is coming in the next paragraph (theme two).

Paragraph 3: Theme Three, Artificial Intelligence in rural healthcare

Paragraph 4: Theme Four, physician shortage in rural areas, and

Paragraph 5: Theme Five, Internet Connectivity.

A student may have more or fewer paragraphs depending on how many themes you have or if you combine several themes in a paragraph.

Then a student will move onto completing the rest of the discussion section tasks (limitations, minimizing limitations, future research, i
