To complete this assignment you must go to Canvas, then Modules, then Assignments/Resources, then 3-5 page 1st Essay Question Assignment. You will be assigned 6 questions, and you must pick 5 of these 6 questions to answer for each of the 6 weeks of topics. Your assigned questions will be posted Saturday March 7 by noon and will be due Sunday March 15 11 pm on Canvas.

Example:  Group 13: You are assigned Week 2 Question A; Week 3 Question B; Week 4 Question C, Week 5 Question D, Week 6 Question A; Week 7 Question C. SELECT 5 OF THESE 6 QUESTIONS TO ANSWER and number them.

For Weeks 2-7, you will be assigned a question to answer from each of the 6 weekly topics.  You must select 5 of the 6 assigned questions to answer. You will write approximately ½ to 2/3 page (at least 200-300 words for each question). For 5 questions you select, your total writing will come to at least 3 pages (900 words at a minimum).  You may write more up to 5 pages (1,500 words), but no less than 900 words excluding footnotes or endnotes. Do not to exceed 1500 words (5 pages). For your essay questions double space, use 1 inch margins around, New Times Roman 12 font. Regarding Footnotes (bottom of page)/Endnotes (end of essay). You can use either.  You go into “Word,” click on “References,” click on insert either footnotes or endnote. Once you insert after sentence.  It drops you to either the bottom of the page (footnote) or end of essay (endnote).  Here is an example, your footnote it should look like this (you can put several sources in one footnote if they all support the same point).[1] See below for footnote style:

2nd Week Topic: “The Southern and Northern Colonies of British Colonial America, 1609-1700 and Native Americans”

  2. (Takaki and Globalyceum) In discussing English colonial settlement in North America, describe the English settlement and colonial develop of Jamestown and the Virginia Colony. Describe the English attitude and treatment of the Powhatan Native Americans living in Virginia.
  3. (Takaki and Globalyceum) In discussing English colonial settlement in North America, describe how the English settlement of New England such as in Plymouth Colony differed from settlement of The Virginia Colony. How and why did the British experience with the New England Iroquois differ from the Virginia Powhatans?
  4. (Globalyceum and Takaki) Discuss the attitudes and treatment of Americans during the early republic (1780s up to the early 1800s) towards Native Americans, include Thomas Jefferson’s attitude. Discuss how Natives responded to the growth of the British colonial population in the 1700s up to early American republic in the late 1700s.

 

3rd Week Topic: The Revolution and Early Slavery in British Colonies

  1. (Takaki) Describe the transition of Africans in North America from indentured servitude to slavery. Why and how did slavery institutionalize?
  2. (Lecture and Takaki) How was African slavery different from slavery in Colonial America? Discuss Thomas Jefferson’s reflections on slavery including his reference to “a wolf by the ears”.
  3. (Globalyceum) What was the historical significance of the Seven Years War and how did it affect British Americans and Native Americans? How did the Natives Americans in the British imperial lands respond to the British presence and why?
  4. (Takaki and Globalyceum) How did African slaves respond to their British treatment during the colonial period and then their treatment by British and American Revolutionaries during Revolutionary/Constitutional Period? How did these African American responses compare to the Native American responses.

 

4th Week Topic: The Constitution, Early Republic and Native American Policy in American South

  1. (Takaki, Lecture, Globalyceum) Discuss Anglo American attitude and treatment of Native Americans during the Revolution and early republic including Tecumseh
  2. (Takaki, Lecture) Discuss the Anglo American early attitude and treatment of the Five Civilized Tribes living in the southern states during the early 1800s and how did this treatment change? What did Anglo Americans do to the Five Civilized Tribes and how did the president at the time influence this outcome? Where did they go?
  3. (Takaki, Globalyceum, Lecture) How and why did the reaction of the Five Civilized Tribes to Anglo American expansion differ from their predecessor Tecumseh?

5th Week Topic: The 19th Century North and Irish Immigrants in the U.S.
