      Course Description

      Introduction to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.  Topics include research methods, biological bases of brain and mind, sensation-perception, sleep and states of consciousness, learning-memory, development, cognition-intelligence, motivation-emotion, personality, abnormal psychology-therapy, and social psychology.  Research findings and principles related to everyday life

      Pre-requisites: BE122 OR BE226 or satisfactory score on the CUNY/ACT Assessment Test

      INDIVIDUAL COURSE OBJECTIVES Addressed by the Course     

      Appropriate to the level of an introductory course, students will be able to:

      Analyze and evaluate research methods that make Psychology a science, including the advantages and

                  disadvantages of each research method, as well as how they are complementary.

      Articulate and assess ethical views and their underlying premises with regards to both research and               therapy.

      Understand basic psychological theories, principles, and concepts.

      Explain how individual differences influence beliefs, values, and interactions with others.

      Apply psychological concepts and principles to their own lives and experiences.

                                                Requirements and Grading


      BLACKBOARD WEBSITE RESOURCES:  The Blackboard site for this class holds a great deal of information that will help you succeed in the course.  It contains study outlines, lecture notes, practice quizzes and other relevant documents. 


      5 Exams each worth 15% of the grade. Exams will consist of multiple-choice questions                                           taken from class notes and readings.  Each Part of the course will have an exam.

                  Total = 75% of final grade


                  Note:   If you miss an exam for any reason, you must schedule a make-up exam                                                             BEFORE the next exam.


      5 Reaction Papers each worth 5 points.   Each Reaction Paper will be based on a                                  different part of the course .  

                  Instructions for the Reaction Papers are on the last page of the syllabus.  

                 Total = 25% of final grade


      Extra Credit Options

      • Initial “Warm Up” Quiz based on Unit 1 (10 points)
      • You may submit two additional Reaction Papers for extra credit (5 points each).


      Class attendance and participation may also be considered toward the final grade.

      ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Regular attendance is expected and required.  Excessive absence and/or lateness (missing more than 15% of class time) will result in a grade penalty.  

      In this class “excessive absence” means 5 or more unexcused absences.

                                                      Academic Integrity Policy

      The Department of Social Sciences Academic Integrity Policy adheres to the standards described in the Academic Integrity Policy of Queensborough Community College.  Within the framework of the college policy sanctions for violations of academic integrity are left to the discretion of the instructor.  Students may appeal sanctions to the department chair who will refer the appeal to a departmental Committee on Academic Integrity for review.

      In this class the following policy will be followed:

      • 1st Violation results in F for the assignment.
      • 2nd Violation results in F for the course and in disciplinary action.


                                              Notice for Students with Disabilities

      • your ideas on the relevance of some course content to your personal life and/or experience using specific examples of how course content is relevant or relatable to you.
      • your thoughts about how some concepts or research findings can be applied in everyday life or in society at large and discussion of why they should be applied.
      • your thoughts about how a theory or area of research might be improved or expanded with reasons


      Format for the Reaction Papers (see next page for sample)

      • Length: at least one full page but no more than 2 pages on (8½” x 11”) paper
      • Double-spaced lines
      • 1 inch margins all around
      • 12-point font (This sentence is typed in 12-point font.)



      NOTEEach Reaction Paper will be due on the date of the corresponding Exam.

                    Papers submitted late will receive a 2 point penalty.
