Assignment overview
This assignment is a mandatory submission, which means that in order to pass this unit of study, you must submit this
assignment.
One important way that infants and young children learn about their world is through their psychosocial development. This
assignment aims to provide you with an opportunity to explore the psychosocial development of children in more detail.
This assignment supports unit learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Assignment details
Throughout the unit, you will examine psychological, social (psychosocial), cognitive and moral components of human
development. Further, you will explore the relationship of these factors to the shaping of an individual’s self-concept.
Commencing in infancy with attachment to parents and caregivers, psychosocial development, according to Erikson (in Hoffnung
et al., 2016), continues throughout the lifespan and involves interactions with caregivers, peers, educators and the wider social
context. This development may be influenced by a variety of normative (expected) and non-normative (deviations from usual)
events or circumstances, which influence infant and early childhood development (Hoffnung et al., 2016).
The two-part lecture on the social and cognitive development of children will be available under the Module 4 and Module 5
learning materials. These lectures will introduce the topic, provide examples to support your understanding and address the
development of children in the age groups featured in the assignment (infants and early childhood). The lectures will also cover
cognitive development, which may drive development in other domains.
Scenario
John is two and a half years old, and is attending day care three days a week for five hours a day while his mother Mary works.
John’s father, Tom, is a full-time shift worker and he cares for John regularly on his two days off each week. Mary explains that
John enjoys music, dancing and singing “silly” songs with his dad, herself and their large extended family.
Mary is concerned that her son is not yet toilet trained during the day, especially since she has noticed that other children seem to
have mastered this skill. Mary also has a couple of concerns in relation to whether or not she should put her son into swimming
lessons. The Child and Family Health Nurse has reassured Mary that John is meeting all his milestones, and will soon gain
continence within the next 12 months or soon afterwards. The Nurse has referred Mary to a parent’s group in her local area to
discuss strategies for managing toddlers in a relaxed informal environment and to discuss the benefits of swimming lessons for
toddlers.
Essay topic
Drawing on relevant nursing and psychosocial science literature, and using at least two examples from the scenario, write an essay
on the following topic:
What are some important aspects of psychosocial development that occur in children between the ages of two and five years
(2-5 years), and what influences this development?
Format
There is a word limit of 1200 words (+/- 10% i.e. between 1080–1320 words) for this paper. Use your computer to total the
number of words used in your assignment, but do not include the reference list at the end of your assignment in the word count. Intext citations will be included in the additional +/- 10% word count. If you exceed the word limit by more than 10%, the marker
will stop marking at 1320 words.
You are required to include a minimum of five recent references (from 2015 onwards), including two peer-reviewed journal
articles, to support your discussion. Please note that you can use literature written within the last ten years (2010–2020), as long as
you include at least five references that are published within the last five years (2015–2020).
