The dynamic nature of market conditions and emerging complexities in the field of healthcare require professionals to demonstrate effective performance at all times. In addition to acquiring basic knowledge, practitioners should have relevant skills and experience in order to perform their duties competently. The rapid scientific and technological innovations are increasingly requiring health professionals to keep up with changesand ensure optimal performance at all times. What is more, the needs and expectations of contemporary patients are expanding and seemingly, they expect healthcare professionals to play greater roles. In response to these changes, stakeholders use a wealth of resources to ensure efficient performance of their health staffs. Education and training equips novice practitioners with important knowledge that they require to perform well in their career. The courses that I have taken have particularly been imperative for preparing me for a career in this important field of specification.
To begin with, being exposed to basic information pertaining to promotion of health and prevention of diseases has been vitally imperative. In this regard, healthcare professionals play instrumental roles with respect to preventing occurrence as well as progression of complications and diseases. Relative activities occur at the individuallevel of the patient as well as at the population level. Specifically, this knowledge will be important in helping me communicate to consumers important knowledge and inform them about relevant strategies including positive behaviors, sleep, diet, and exercise. Research evidence reveals that health professionals influence assumption of positive mannerisms by populations in different ways (Wright 82). Thus, thisknowledge will be important in helping me make a positive impact on the health of populations.
Knowledge of efficient resource use is equally essential for effective performance in the field of healthcare. Basically, this empowers professionals with an ability to understand the benefits and costs of various therapeutic choices as well as diagnostics (Wright 83). Besides providing healthcare that is effective and which contributes to improvement of health, patients need to access options that can enable them benefit the most from their limited resources. The objective of the resource utilization course is to impart in the professionals the ability to provide high-quality healthcare and promote resource utilization at the same time. In workplace settings, this knowledge is vital for strengthening coordination and relationships between stakeholders. For instance, competent clinicians in this regard understand the critical roles that different parties such as insurance agencies and employers play in financing healthcare. They take practical measures to advice patients about the most suitable and available financing alternatives that they can explore to access and benefit from quality healthcare.
Modern trends indicate that apart from acquiring fundamental knowledge in healthcare, practitioners face the challenge of demonstrating evidence based practice. This accredits their performance and increases the quality of their outcomes. Exposure to the importance of evidence based practice during the course of my studies is helpful in my career in different ways. At the very elemental level, clinicians assume the responsibility of administering as well as monitoring essential therapeutic regimens and interventions (Mitchell and Haroun 31). Specifically, they administer medications safely and accurately, start and maintain intravenous therapy, and undertake wound management. Knowledge in this area ensures minimization of health complications and risks and fosters patient comfort and healing. Evidence based practice would be useful for helping me provide patients with pertinent information regarding health advise, therapeutic and diagnostic options, and safeguard the safety of the patients. Besides enhancing the quality of outcomes, such initiatives will be instrumental for reducing costs and saving important resources.
Certainly, communication skills are an important aspect of healthcare provision that previous courses have exposed me to. More than ever, practitioners are required to demonstrate communication competency in order to deliver services with ease. In a typical work environment, I will be able to assess the communication preferences of various individuals including consumers, their families, as well as colleagues prior to communicating with them. Using this knowledge, I will be able to understand my communication abilities and align these to the needs of the clients and colleagues. Most importantly, this knowledge will help me to relay vital information to families, consumers, and multidisciplinary teams in an effective and accurate manner. At this point, it is worth acknowledging that the field of healthcare requires professionals to communicate information in different formats (Wright 68). For instance, the format of information relating to medical prescriptions differs considerably to that contained in medical reports. Further, these communication skills would help in minimizing conflicts and strengthening relationships at all levels. Strong relations enhance the quality of outcomes because of the inherent positive attitudes and commitment.
Healthcare courses that address the importance of leadership competencies expose students to relative skills at a very elemental stage. These are vital and helpful to the professionals at both the individual and institutional level. The leadership skills enable practitioners to oversee and ensure provision of quality healthcare at all times. Leaders in practical settings understand, appreciate, and respect individual and institutional visions, goals, and objectives. They commit to execution of their duties in an effective manner. In addition, they practice loyalty because of the fact that the institutions that they work for empower them accordingly. In most cases, they strive to align their individual objectives to institutional and professional goals. Besides committing to the progress and empowerment of colleagues, leadership abilities will enable me to ensure professional advancement at an individual level. In this respect, this knowledge will help me to explore advancement opportunities including continued professional development. As a leader in the work environment, I will be able to delegate responsibilities as well as trust and respect the abilities of my subordinates. I will have the confidence to participate in professional organizations and influence healthcare policy that has direct implications on both consumers and professionals.
Knowledge relating to the evaluation of professional practice is essential for practitioners to perform well in the ever-changing work environment. During the course of my study, I attained vital knowledge relating to self-evaluation in relation to the standards, rules, guidelines, and regulations that govern the healthcare profession. Specifically, this knowledge will enable me to provide appropriate healthcare and exercise cultural competence. Frequent self-evaluations will enhance timely identification of areas of strength and weaknesses. Basing on informal as well as formal feedback from clients and colleagues, I will take practical measures to address the weaknesses that compromise performance. In order to improve institutional performance, I will also participate in peer review. This entails an objective analysis of the performance of team members in relation to the laid down policy frameworks. It improves performance by encouraging customization of service to meet and satisfy the needs of clients (Mitchell and Haroun 112).
The healthcare profession is interdisciplinary and draws upon the contributions of professionals from different fields. In order to improve outcomes, practitioners partner with and rely on the knowledge and competencies of various professionals. According to Wright, this is attained through pursuit of different inter-professional activities including technological development, intensive consultation, education and training, and research (Wright 72). Having attained knowledge relating to the importance of strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, I will be able to function executively in the work environment. Specifically, this ability will help me to relate with others positively and contribute directly to production of desirable results through knowledge sharing. Currently, I have the capability to communicate to all health providers about my role in promoting health. This is imperative for eliminating conflicts that stem from misinformation at different levels. Further, strong interpersonal skills will be imperative for resolving and managing conflicts in the work place. Ideally, workplace settings are characterized by various types of conflicts that have a negative impact on the functioning of teams. Application of effective problem solving techniques addresses the conflicts in a sustainable manner.
In sum, education and training equips students with essential skills, knowledge, and competencies that they require to perform well in the modern work environment. Coupled with sufficient experience, health care professionals use their knowledge, skills, and expertise to provide quality services to clients, interact effectively with other professionals, and promote the functioning of the society in different ways. The skills that I have acquired over time prepare me to perform well in a typical work environment. In addition to fundamental knowledge, problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, leadership, communication, and resource utilization skills will provide critical guidance.
