Sample Presentation Paper on Information Technology in Healthcare

Information technology often referred to as IT is anything related to networking, hardware, internet, computing and software. It is an important means of simplifying work done by business, healthcare, educationists and other sectors of the economy. Many companies have created IT departments to manage the use of IT in the organization. Modern society is made up of information communication that is on the rise resulting to significant dependence of technology in the society (Kuo 5). Computer literacy is becoming essential to all personnel in the job market and those in the business field. The assignment is carried out in order to learn about the applications of information technology in the medical field.

Uses of IT

Using information technology in healthcare is an important practice that helps in gathering information, treatments, research and communication (Chau and Hu 700). All the departments use IT in managing their affairs. For instance, the human resource department uses IT to manage the details of employees and their remuneration, as well as their welfare. It reduces the time work is carried out and improves the efficiency of healthcare personnel.

I use information technology to record the details of the patients and store it in the database of the hospital for future reference. The patient’s information is first recorded and made available in all the departments concerned with treatment and consultations.

Medical providers have new methods of administering treatments and testing. The treatments given are better and subject patients less suffering as compared to early methods. Nurses and other medical practitioners use the techniques to record patient’s data and medical history. Lab results for patients can be stored in their database for future references. Doctors use the internet to find information about symptoms and signs of particular diseases thus widening their knowledge about the diseases and proper diagnosis. Modern medical machines are used to treat complex issues like cancer. The availability of the technologies has simplified the procedures cancer patients undergo in treatments. Additionally, the use of technology has opened up the field of medicine. Healthcare personnel can use email or conference facilities available online to consult their colleagues all over the world on how to treat certain diseases. This can happen without referring the patients to other hospitals that are sophisticated thus increasing the chances of survival of the patients.

Available Technologies

Electronic Health Records. It is a system that records and maintains the medical history for patients that can be used in the future (Blumenthal 1478). EHR system keeps the organization competitive in healthcare provision. It is a record having patient’s information generated by all health care encounters in the facility as they treat the patient. The system contains information recorded at every department a patient visits from the point of reception to exit from the hospital. When the client visits the hospital for treatment another time, the details of the previous visit will be available thus giving the medical staff to have a clear health history of the patient.

Surgical Line Technologies. The technology enables all the doctors and nurses administration to work together in determining the best strategies to employ in surgical operations. The robotic surgical system involves the use of machines that are computer operated in carrying out operations on patients. Neurosurgical and other surgical departments use the technology to operate patients who require delicate handling. The physicians are allowed to provide alternatives to their patients as they carry out medical procedures.

Smartphone Applications. The use of smartphones in the society has greatly increased, and doctors are not left behind from using the technology. Healthcare staff uses the phones because they have sophisticated applications that enable them interact with the patients. They are used to follow up on the progress of the patient after treatment. The social media tools provide a platform of communication that makes the need to visit the hospital for inquiries not necessary. Technology has significantly increased the reach of patients by doctors through the use social media tools. The organization uses social media to initiate contact with those seeking medical attention or have questions regarding particular diseases. It is not only the patients suffering from ailments, but also those who want to find critical information about their health.

Infection Detection Technologies. An example of technique used in the hospital is the procalcitonin often referred as PCT. The high-quality program of infection prevention in the organization keeps the hospital free of infection. It allows the hospital to comply with regulations that regard public health. PCT is a tool used in detecting sepsis to avoid over utilization of antibiotics (Jin and Khan 173). The technology helps in improving patient care thus giving the hospital a competitive advantage against its competitors in the sector.

Acquiring Skills

The skills of operating the healthcare records system were acquired by training in college and subsequent on job training. Experienced staff often inducts new employees on the use of the system until they are satisfied that the new employees are competent enough to be left alone to do the job.

Technology use comes with its side effects. Examples of the problems encountered in using the technology are system crash and addiction. The system may crash leading to loss of information. Additionally, the use of social media can draw away the attention of the personnel from other important cases. More time may be consumed while chatting with patients outside the facility thus subjecting the ones on the queue to stress by waiting long time to be served.

Impact of Using IT

The technology gives the organization a competitive advantage over its competitors. The use of IT has simplified the systems of obtaining information; improving treatment and ensuring follow-up of patient’s status. This move has made the team win the hearts of clients visiting the hospital because they are assured of good and quality health care.

IT Department

The organization has information technology department that is charged with developing and running all the systems necessary for providing services to patients and all clients visiting the hospital.

Organisation of the IT Department

The department has a head manager who is responsible for all operations of the department. The department consist of staff who are software developers and support, and the hardware maintenance staff. It also has training staff that carry out routine training of personnel on the new technologies developed by the department or emerging technologies in the medical field.

The use of IT in healthcare is important as it improves the services offered to the patients. Errors associated with wrong judgements have been eliminated thus improving results from treatments. Doctors and other personnel should be cautious in using social media to make sure that they don’t abuse it while working. Additionally, the hospital management should be swift in adopting emerging technologies that are aimed to improve serve provision to hospital clients.
