In the article: “Insured, but Not Covered” Elisabeth Rosenthal explored health insurance cover in the United States (U.S) with regards to the Affordable Care Act. According to Rosenthal (1), the Act has done away with some practices that were in the past associated with the American health insurance system. For example, insurers have the reasonability of providing health insurance cover to people with pre-existing health conditions. Through the Act, more than 10 million Americans have been provided with health insurance that they did not have in the past. Rosenthal’s (1) concern however, is that the Act has undermined its promise of providing accessible and affordable healthcare for all. Because of the premiums being paid, most of the Americans are finding it hard to afford health care. For this reason, patients are left to fend for themselves because the healthcare insurances can no longer sustain the medical bills. To Rosenthal (1) most of the Americans are insured, but lack medical health insurance.

There is no doubt that the Affordable Care Act or the Obamacare has helped tens of millions of Americans to get access to high quality and affordable health insurance via the Health Insurance Market place and the Medicaid expansion. I concur with   Rosenthal that the Act has reformed the health sector by providing new benefits to patients, increasing rights and protections. However, in order to support the policy, Americans will be required to pay high taxes, especially high-earners which affect employers. I also agree that majority of lower wage Americans will find it hard to afford health insurance because they will be offered coverage by their employers. The intentions of the policy are good, but it has not make health insurance affordable and accessible to most Americans.
