Sample Essay on Effects of Stress on Physical Health

The effects of stress on the physical health of human beings include heart disease and formations of cancer cells among others. Stress has been linked to diseases which cause death; for instance, heart disease, cancer, lung ailments etc (Seaward 3). Frustration is one of the factors that lead to stress and interferes with the normal functioning of the human body.  Frustration occurs when certain things block attainment of goals or needs in the life of human beings. This paper critically reviews effects of stress on the health of people and gives suggestion on how it can be managed.

Bodies of human beings react to stress by releasing hormones which alter the normal functioning of the immune system. Long-term stress leads to problems, for instance, high blood pressure, menstrual and skin problems that interfere with the normal functioning of the body of those affected. If  not dealt with early enough stress can result in a condition referred to as distress that negatively affects the physical health of the victim. Distress leads to health complications which have symptoms, for example, headaches, stomach upset, increased blood pressure and sleeping disorders. Stress also becomes detrimental when the victims use alcohol, tobacco or drugs to try to mitigate it. Drugs keep the body in an unhealthy state and results to more problems instead of mitigating stress.

Stress affects human beings in diverse ways and is known to be a cause of physical and psychological ill health of the victims. Stress can cause unusual and dysfunctional behavior at work and contribute to poor physical and mental health. In short-term, stress results to disorders and illnesses which range from chronic fatigue to depression.  Chronic stress or traumatic events may lead to psychological problems thus an unhealthy life of the victim (Gregson 10). People who experience stress may become distressed, irritable and have difficulties in thinking in a logical way and making informed decisions

Stress results in an adjustment disorder which affects the physical heath of the victim. It is a reaction which is maladaptive to a stressor that starts within a short period from the time the person was first affected. The maladaptive response is characterized by major changes in social, occupational, emotional state of the body that go beyond those which are induced by stress. The reaction has a negative impact on the physical health of the person who is affected because it may lead to diseases, for instance, heart attack.

Stress has detrimental effects on the endocrine system, the system release secretions, referred to as hormones directly into the blood stream during stress. The hormones increase resistance, foster the development of muscles and stimulate the liver to release sugar which provides needed energy for responding to the stressor. However, when stress is continuous, the body will continuously release stress hormones and mobilize other systems, which may deplete the resources of the body and affect the physical health of the victim. Stress weakens the body of the victim and increases a person’s risk of getting other problems that may result to diseases. Symptoms of stress are as a result of hormones that are released in body organs to counter stressors (Wheeler 8).

Managing stress is a process of transformation in which the victim moves from a motivation of fear to a motivation of compassion and love. A person can transform stress producing patterns into patterns that prevent stress. First, physical activities like exercise are the effective way to manage stress because they play a crucial role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress. Physical exercises like running, swimming, walking among others aid to relieve stress and burn away anger, tension and frustration. Exercise releases endorphins that boost moods and make the victim feel good. Physical exercises also serve as a distraction to daily worries and thus keep the person who engages in them stress-free. Activities which are continuous and involve the movement of both arms and legs, for instance, swimming, running are effective at dealing with stress.

Second, social engagement is also another method in which stress can be managed. This experience of safety as perceived by the nervous system results from nonverbal cues that are heard, seen and felt.  Communicating with others makes someone feel safe and thus helps them to share out their problems hence relieving stress. The ear, heart, stomach and other body organs are connected to the brain and by interacting with others calm a person down and helps him/her to manage stress.

Third, avoiding things that cannot be changed can also help someone to manage stress. Another effective way to manage stress is to accept things as they are though it is difficult; it’s easier than living a lie by railing against situations that cannot be changed. Rather than stressing out over them, a person should focus on the things that can be controlled such as the way he/she chooses to react to problems. When faced with major challenges, a person should try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth.

Stress affects many people in their daily lives and hampers them from accomplishing their goals. Stress related behaviors are majorly initiated and caused by perceptions which are self-defeating and can be changed. Stress can be managed and controlled if those who are affected are ready to change their thoughts towards certain issues in life.
