Conflict refers to the expressed struggle between two or more interdependent parties or individuals who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from others in their aim to achieve their goals (Wilmot & Hocker, 2014). It is important to note that one of the key perspectives in conflict is interdependence because conflicting parties have to engage in an expressed struggle or interference with one another when they are interdependent. Contrarily, an independent person who has no interest in what others do is unlikely to be in conflict with another person. However, from the perspective of the seminar on Conflict Resolution, conflict was defined as a serious disagreement between two or more individuals or parties, which jeopardizes not only communication but socialization as well.

The two most preferable conflict styles, from a personal point of view, explored in Hocker & Wilmot (2014) are the competitive and collaborative styles. The competitive conflict style is often uncooperative and aggressive, and the primary focus is on winning. In this style, a person’s needs are often advocated for at the expense of those of others, and there is low regard for future or long term relationships among those in conflict. The collaborative style of conflict involves a combination of assertiveness and respect in the pursuance of an individual’s goals, and there is a great concern as well for the goals of the other party (Wilmot & Hocker, 2014). In the real sense, the collaborative style paves the way for consensus and the integration of the needs of those in conflict, which in the long run help in the achievement of a better solution.

Both the competitive and collaborative conflict styles identified above are advantageous and disadvantageous in various ways. To start with, the competitive conflict style is beneficial because it can be constructive and encourages each side in a conflict to strive for success. However, this style is disadvantageous in various ways. First, it paves the way for obstructed communication where conflicting parties try to gain ground by misleading each other through misinformation and false promises. Second, to a large extent, competitive conflict fosters the notion that solution to the conflict can only be imposed by one party on the other, which should not be the case. Third, competitive conflict encompasses disagreement and rejection of ideas, and this in a way reduces self-confidence of those in conflict (Spangler, 2003). On the other hand, collaborative conflict is advantageous as it allows conflicting parties to express their concerns openly and work towards finding a solution that is mutually beneficial. Besides, this style results in the creative problem-solving as well as respect among those in conflict. However, one of its major disadvantages is that it takes more time as compared to other conflict styles. Moreover, collaborative conflict encompasses too many creative solutions that may result in a lack of accountability among those in conflict (Spangler, 2003).

The benefits of collaborative conflict have been manifested in my life on several occasions. On one occasion, I vehemently disagreed with a close friend on whether it was right to spend the little cash we had during a holiday on partying or invest in on a small business that would give us returns later on. My friend was pro the partying idea, which I opposed resulting to a huge conflict between us. However, we took time to exchange the ideas we had while carefully identifying the pros and cons of each, and through this, we settled on an amicable solution to the conflict at hand.
