Sample Essay on the Effect of Monopolizing the World Grain Market

The advent of agricultural practices catapulted the development of human society. Trade relations and development of cities are among the important events, which resulted from the development of agricultural practices. Owing to this aspect, agriculture has always been viewed as an important aspect of economics and human sustainability. Therefore, it is important to ensure all matters relating to agriculture are handled with utmost care. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.

Currently, millions of people worldwide are facing the threat of starvation. Food shortage has hit an unexpected all-time high. However, most people have not been keen to look into the reason behind this shortage, most attributing it to climatic changes. The sad truth is that a bigger scheme by multinational companies to withhold food and profit from shortages goes on unnoticed. The food shortage is making a handful of multinational giants and investors millions of dollars. Multinational giants, such as ADM, Cargill, Bunge and Luis Dreyfurs, are said to control at least 90% of the world’s grain supplies. They operate in an unregulated market, with skewed practices and policies with the main aim of making profit, paying little or no attention to the fact that their modes of operation are sinking the world in economic and environmental risks.

Grain farmers have been at loggerheads with these monopoly companies for decades now with no viable solution being reached. Having advanced machinery for the production and processing of grains has been a major bargaining power for these corporate monopolies. They have been constantly reconfiguring their relationship with farmers, setting prices, and policies that benefit them at the cost of the farmers. Examples of such unfair practices include corporate ownership of land, control over agricultural processing, and being the only ones allowed to hold grain reserves.

It is unfortunate that no fruitful debate has been held in a bid to regulate these monopolies. Governments worldwide have been slacking in coming up with legislation that will ensure the grain market is regulated, majorly due to the fact that these multinationals own billions of dollars and usually aid most of them. A global public debate should be one of the steps to ensure governments work together to look into this global crisis. When citizens are adequately informed on the root causes of food shortage, they will have more incentive to pressure their individual governments to seek solutions.

Grain farmers ought to embrace a dynamic set of agricultural practices that ensure equity, productivity, and sustainability of the world grain supply. These practices, backed with the millions of hardworking grain farmers who have for decades fought to sustain themselves and their communities through fair economic practices will definitely unchain the world population from the hold of these monopolistic companies. Farmers need to mobilize and form solid unions that are keen on ensuring fair practices on the sale and distribution of grains worldwide. These steps will only be viable if global political changes regarding laws governing the grain market are put in place coupled with financial assistance to farmers. Governments should focus on protecting the interests of the grain farmers who are the backbone of the agricultural sector, rather than focusing on protecting the powerful hungry multinationals. Information is power, and everyone should be informed about these skewed practices.
