Great Gatsby is a story both narrated in a novel and movie. The story is interesting as it portrays the characters who are more competent and so attractive to the audience and readers. Nevertheless, the story covers several historical events which are valuable in regards to information that can be used to understand the history of US. Both the film and the book are easy to understand because of the ways in which they are narrated. Some of the characters in the story include: Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, Nick, Jordan among others whereas; every character plays a great role in the story. Baz Luhrmann might have adapted F. Scott Fitzgerald’s version of The Great Gatsby though there are some difference that can be pointed out from the book and the film and this is analyzed below.
Comparison between the Great Gatsby novel and the movie version 2013
When you look at the two versions, there is a difference in which the book and the film create various emotions and thoughts. The film brings about many emotions when one watches unlike reading the book. On the other hand, the film is seen to have focused a lot on impressing the audience hence making some major themes in the novel lost. In addition, the actors in the movie are weak and even simple-minded as compared to the characters in the book. The Great Gatsby music featured so many times in the movie than in the book while Lana Del Rey’s song was played equally in both.
As a matter of fact, the film did a great work in bringing to understanding what is portrayed in the book, however, some differences are seen in this aspect. Therefore, one of the difference is that in the book, Nick Carraway is talking strictly to the reader whereas in the movie the noted individual is telling the therapist about the experiences he has with Gatsby. Nevertheless, Nicks love with Jordan Baker is not portrayed in the movie and because of that; the development of Jordan as one of the characters is so minimal.
In reality, Gatsby’s love with Daisy is not indicated in the book but is portrayed in the movie. As can be seen in the movie, at the Plaza hotel, Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, Nick, Jordan are together whereas; Gatsby makes it clear to all that they are in love with Daisy and she has no love for Tom. Neither of the named individuals nor other characters knew about the love Gatsby is talking about and are both dumbfounded as Gatsby loses his temper.
In addition, due to the fact that, Tom cheats on his wife in the movie, does not portray him as a more evil person as compared to the book. Therefore, Daisy in the movie is more likable than the husband Tom.in the movie, Nick and Jordan Baker are seen together most of the time. However, Nick is sometimes so close to Gatsby and is not able to notice the named lady, in the book, Nick and Baker fell in love.
In the novel, all the story seems to be an illusion, however, in the movie, the story is seen to be real to some extent. Truly, one may not understand the movie before reading the book. However, both the book and the movie brings much understanding to the listeners and readers about the characters.
Nevertheless, the characters in the movie are seen to exaggerate their actions than the ones in the book. People like Jordan Barker were not even supposed to be included in the movie, because, there is no big relationship between her and Nick. For that reason, she was only used to help in narrating the story about the life of Gatsby which is not so important. Leonardo’s death is not given much attention and no one attended the funeral, however, in the book, his father is said to have come and even gave some story about his son to Nick.
Regarding quotations, the novel was quoted appropriately but when it comes to the movie, some of the quotes were not well pronounced the way they are in the book. Therefore, the audience might find it difficult to understand what some of the actors were saying. In reality, this makes certain parts in the movie not impressive. On the contrary, the characters seen in the movie were the same ones in the book hence, showing some similarities.
In a nutshell, Baz Luhrmann might have adapted F. Scott Fitzgerald’s version of The Great Gatsby though there are some difference that can be pointed from both the film and the book. Some of the comparisons entail; Gatsby’s love with Daisy is not indicated in the book but is portrayed in the movie. On the hand, in the book, Nick Carraway is talking strictly to the reader whereas in the movie the noted person is telling the therapist about the experiences he has with Gatsby. In addition to that, the characters seen in the movie were the same ones in the book hence, showing some similarities. Therefore, both the book and the movie are both interesting hence can be recommended for all individuals who like the story.
