Sample Essay on the City of Toronto

(Day of trip: Tuesday, 8 am)

Toronto, like other cities around the world, has continually undergone physical, social, and economic changes (Jacobs 99), and this was highlighted by the significant developments I observed when taking a ride along 506 Carlton route. I began my observation at the outskirts of the city where I observed small retail stores with low rising buildings. Also forming part of the neighborhood was a Chinese food market, a fast food restaurant, and a medical office.  I noticed that the residents of the neighborhood were mainly Asians particularly Chinese although there were white people in other parts. Chinese retail shops and restaurants served the Chinese population whereas a couple of western stores and a big smoke market served the white people. Apparently, small retail stores and low rising buildings were dominant in the neighborhood. The neighborhood’s population was relatively high, a perspective highlighted by the myriads of houses in the area. Moreover, there was a church and two public parks, one with a parking lot, and this indicated that a few residents owned cars. The normal houses in the neighborhood as well as the small retail shops and stores, which were the neighborhood’s main economic areas, were indications of a middle-income population.

In the second neighborhood, I noticed several small retail shops, and the population comprised mostly of white people. There were several university buildings, lecture buildings, a hospital, and student residences. I also noticed that a significant percentage of the population in the neighborhood comprised of young people, mostly students. I could also observe many offices and high rise buildings in the neighborhood. Apartments, restaurants, and entertainment joints dominated the neighborhood’s main economic area. In other parts of the neighborhood, there were Asian and Indian residents. Moreover, the area had shopping malls, restaurants, a university, and a park. The small restaurants and coffee shops in the neighborhood served the student population. The presence of high-rise buildings, well-built apartments, entertainment joints, shopping malls, and educational facilities was an indication that the neighborhood was wealthy (Brand 4), and a significant percentage of the residents were high-income earners. We then proceeded to the third neighborhood whose population comprised mainly of whites. In the third neighborhood, small offices and small restaurants with low rise buildings were present. The neighborhood was like an Italian town because of the existence of several Italian restaurants. The neighborhood’s main economic area was around the banks, restaurants, and entertainment places. Churches, small retail shops, and clinics were also present in the neighborhood. Unlike the previous neighborhoods, Asian population was not present in the third neighborhood. I noticed that graffiti art was dominant on the street walls, and the road in the area was complex. I could also see a big park known as High Park with houses around and most of the residents used public service, and thus, boarded the bus in which I was. It was evident that the residents in the neighborhood easily accessed the GTA Transit Service. I noticed that the neighborhood was cleaner as compared to the previous neighborhoods. There were more old people with children on the streets and the houses were low and poorly constructed. Evidently, the residents of the third neighborhood were low-income earners, and thus, it was poorer as compared to the previous neighborhood visited.

From my observation of the city, I can conclude that Toronto, as seen in the readings and lectures is a city of neighborhoods, with each of the neighborhoods providing different access to social and community services, as well as infrastructure (Hulchanski 3). For instance, I noticed that more infrastructure and social facilities such as entertainment joints, parks, and educational facilities were present in the second neighborhood. In fact, the presence of a wide range of facilities and social amenities indicated the wealthy nature of the second neighborhood. Each of the neighborhoods was undergoing rapid change as seen in the newly constructed houses, restaurants, and other social amenities (Jacobs 99).
