As the Mayor of Sparksville, I would like to thank all the town’s citizens for their support I start my work. My focus will be to promote the overall local economy as well as the maintaining a high level of environmental air quality. The current economic situation of Sparksville is not bad considering the increased number of commercial and trading centers. The town is characterized with the various economic activities including service related industries such as banking, farming and administrative services. The costs of housing are not high to affect the living standards of the people. More than 50 per cent of the people lives above the poverty level. This indicates the nature of economic growth and development in the city (Wang & Hao, 2012). As I take over, I plan to lower the interest rates as well as improving the various infrastructures in the town. In order to maintain a high level of environmental air quality, there are three available choices. They includes encouraging the use of public transport, monitoring and controlling of factories and industries on their emissions level and
First, the increased use of public transport would reduce the number of private vehicles used by the citizens. This has a direct impact on reducing the level of air emissions in the environment. It is a relevant intervention towards reducing the amount of air pollution. Secondly, the effective monitoring and controlling the activities of the factories is another available choice in tackling air pollution. Emissions from factories accounts for a large percentage of air contamination and pollution. Thus, the restrictions on the level of carbons and gaseous products emitted from the factors promote the environmental air quality (Vlachokostas, Achillas, Michailidou, & Moussiopoulos, 2012). During rainy seasons, emissions from the factories could of point of both water and air pollution. For instance, acid rain that drains to the rivers and lakes is caused by carbon emissions from the factories.
Water and air pollution generated from the various source could affect the health of the Sparksville’s citizens, the local ecosystems and the local economy. For instance, acid rains could kill most of the water animals including fish that acts as a source of food and income for the local economy. This represents an instance of environmental and social pollution as it depletes or reduces the quality of the positive resources and facilities that are suitable and necessary for the lives and survival of such species. Ecosystems need specific features and resources that are often naturally available, and which support the effective and productive lives of various species in the particular habitat. The interference with such resources through factors such as human activity and both natural and unnatural activities and phenomena contributes to the depletion and deterioration in the quality of such resources, depleting their capacity to support and facilitate the propagation and development of the resources, mostly living things such as the fishes in the case above. In addition, water and air pollution has been blamed for increased global warming effect. This has led to the shift of the climatic patterns in the society. This in turn affects the farming activities and economic activities of the local town. In spite of all, contaminated water could also lead to various human diseases (Kneese & Bower, 2013). This would lead the ability of the people to engage in other productive activities in the local economy. It could also strain the resources of the local authorities towards controlling and preventing the effects of water and air pollution. As a result, the local governments would ignore other aspects of development in the town leading to slow economic development in Sparksville.
One of the ways of reducing the impacts of air pollution would be collect and analyze quality and precision of air monitoring data. This helps in understanding the nature of efforts present in providing recommendable environmental air quality. The local authorities should issue permits to the factors and related facilities for limiting open burning. The establishment of air quality plans and regulations in the various public involvement and collaboration is also crucial. Since, it enhances partnerships and coordination towards supporting air quality in the town. Lastly, the investigation of complaints and violations with the Sparksville air pollution laws. This helps in handling all air pollution cases in the town.
I think the decisions to handle the key environmental challenges is optimal choice, as it provides necessary prevention measures against the adverse impacts of water and air pollution. It also represents a way of fulfilling personal desires and enhancing my contribution as an individual and member of the society to socioeconomic development and the betterment of my society, through efforts that have the effect of improving the quality and suitability of my society and environment. The decision is also cost effective, since it incorporates the citizens in the preserving their environment. Thus, most of the local government funds and resources would not only be used in tackling environmental issues, but also in the development of the town.
