Human body relies on food, just as vehicles rely on fuel. Food has direct effect on the body’s functions, as it ensures the body remains healthy and free from illnesses. Fast foods have become common since they offer the easiest way to satisfy our hunger. However, fast foods lack nutritious values that are necessary for maintaining good health. Fast foods contain .high levels of carbohydrates, high sugar levels, and unhealthy fats. Although fast foods are budget-friendly, their effects on human body can be devastating. Numerous researches have proved that fast foods cause obesity, anxiety, depression, diabetes, cancer, and other lifestyle diseases.
Eating fast foods diet increases individuals’ vulnerability to obesity. Proximity to fast food joint enhances the risk of obesity, as individuals are likely to take more calories than the daily requirement. One major effect of taking fast food every daily is having excess calorie in the body, which is beyond the recommended daily consumption. Long-term excess calorie facilitates weight gain, leading to obesity. Obesity from fast food is quite common among children than adults, as children are more likely to take fast foods than adults. Obesity is the root cause of chronic ailments such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, among others.
The chances of suffering from cancer after taking fast food diet are quite high. Unhealthy diets that have excess fat, which are normally served in many fast food joints, increases individual’s capacity to suffer from Type 2 diabetes, which consequently result to cancer (Smith 84). The risk of cancer may continue to grow because some of the additives in fast foods inhibit the growth of some bacteria that fight infections. Excess sodium in food may escalate the development of stomach cancer and kidney stones.
Fast foods lack dietary fiber that reduces the chances of constipating. Dietary fiber, which is normally lacking in fast food, is essential in the digestive system. Dietary fiber clears the digestive tract so that waste can be disposed out of the body with ease. When an individual eats fast foods, the digestive system slows down due to low fiber content and high level of fat, leading to constipation. Fat tends to slow down the movement of waste while the gut will endeavor to absorb calories from fat. In such situation, the stomach becomes uncomfortable, as the tract is not working effectively.
Eating fast food regularly causes bones to become relatively weak due to lack of essential nutrients to strengthen them. According to Organic Authority, children who have developed a habit of consuming fast food increase the chance of developing weak bones, thus, putting themselves in danger of contracting other health problems later in life (Ettinger par. 1). Fast food is normally packed with excess sodium, and too much sodium in the body makes bones weak, leading to some health problems such as osteoporosis.
People who consume fast foods daily have higher chances of getting worried than people who take healthy foods. Fast foods lack omega-3 fatty acids that assist in mental development. Although lack of certain nutrients in food does not result in anxiety, highly refined carbohydrates usually affect the concentration of blood sugar. When the blood sugar reduces to hypoglycemic level, an individual may experience bewilderment, anxiety, and weariness. According to Smith, taking health diet that incorporate vegetables, fruits, and fish, can assist in preventing depression and anxiety (191).
Fast food diet has numerous effects on human health. Fast foods have low fiber content and high levels of calories, thus, lacking essential nutrients to keep body healthy. Individuals need healthy diet to enhance effective body functioning. Too much calories can cause obesity, which consequently result to other chronic ailments such as diabetes, heart diseases, and cancer. Fast foods make the body uncomfortable and can inhibit mental development.
