Reflection Paper

The Havasupai Indians culture is represented in a great way in the video about the  blood journey. Havasupai way of living has contributed so much to contact of diabetes and other contagious diseases. They practice agriculture as a way of making the ends meet. Their cultural practices have contributed a lot to the development or emergence of health issues. This paper reflects on the rituals and symbolic resources in regard to cultural attributes in this community.

When their ancestors come into the area, they found a new land to settle in. They went through the honeymoon stage, crisis stage, recovery stage and adaptation stage in the area. Due to high mortality rate, the population reduced by a great deal an action that frustrated the community. They got involved in alcoholism and gambling. This increased the level of stress hence becoming diabetic. The situation has been passed through the blood to the current generation that still suffers the disease.

They also rear animals for food and hides. By heavily relying on meat and vegetables, the community is prone to diseases such as diabetes due to high intake of protein and carbohydrates. Water is symbolically incorporated in the video because the community depends on the resource as a means of livelihood. Using the water, the community members are in a position to farm their land hence able to grow vegetables and fruits such as water melon. The name Havasupai is connected to the river, which is their symbolic resource. They also use the red rocks for celebrating the Grand Canyon that protects them from the sun and bad weather. Lastly, minimum resources for the community have led to the reduction of the population that is affected by the mortality rate. Economically, the community relies on tourism. Tourists come in the area to watch the beautiful sceneries. The community member act as tour guides hence tourism form the main income generating activities that the member engages in. Those are some of the cultural attributes manifested in the video.
