Social media is the communication among individuals whereby they provide and share ideas and information in networks and virtual community (Chan & Cho, 2005). Web-based technologies and mobile are the key parameters of the highly interactive platforms which individuals and communities in general design, discuss, share and modify the generated user content. A unique feature about social media is that it provides an interface for strangers to meet and also enables users to make and articulate their visible social networks. How has social media transformed our lives within our society and what are some of the critics realized by this media technology? Be my audience as I take you through this argumentative discussion, whereby both the positive and negative influence of social media will be examined.
Social network sites such as twitter, Facebook and MySpace have attracted billion users; with majority having integrated the sites into daily practices since their invention. Also, Twitter and Facebook are automated to enable an e-mail address entry for effective access of the users contact list. The societal phenomenon merits of social media are vast and as a result, social media phenomena is a wide cross polarization of culture, individual and interest. Personally, I second the invention of this life transforming technology since there is more to gain than loose. In today’s modern world, social media has turned into a diverse day to day activity, making life easier and entertaining. Some of the transforming attributes of social media in our society include; first and foremost, it benefits the businesses in our society. Economy is essential for the development of any given society globally, and as a result, social media site such as Facebook and Twitter creates industries and thousands of job vacancies thereby generating sales and incomes (Panaccione, 2010)
Secondly, information is spread faster in social media than in any other media. Information is very vital and social media has this field covered with most people in society learning about breaking news through sites as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Social networking sites are the leading source of top news followed by other print publications. Thirdly, law enforcement use social media to arrest and prosecute criminals. Law enforcement is a necessity in societies and research indicates that local law enforcement, federal and state professionals petition that social media helps eradicate crime rates more efficiently and with ease. Last but not least, social media tackles education fields whereby it provides academic research to wider audience; enabling most people to access unavailable educational resources. Most students including myself retrieve academic coursework from the less costly media. It promotes learning, interaction and creativity among students of varying age groups and different learning institutions.
However, it is predominant to note that everything which is beneficial in most ways never lack its critics; and just like the law of gravity, social media falls in this natural flow of expectations and has its shares of critics. Some of the critiques are examined as follows; as much as social media is considered to be the fastest site to spread information, studies also show that the information shared could be false and unreliable (Jung, 2008). It is also argued that social media lacks privacy and expose users to corporate intrusions and government. Additionally, social media entice individuals to waste time; mostly among the adolescents and the youth age groups brackets spending most of their time on the net, and as a result less time is spent interacting face to face. Furthermore, a social media site creates room for cyber bullying. However, all these critics can be outlined by certain measures set up by the social site security team. With the correct implementation of security measures, social media positively transforms the world through various diverse ways.
