Sample Critical Thinking Paper on Stealing is Always Wrong

Stealing is Always Wrong

In the essay ‘Stealing is always wrong’, the author puts forward a clear argumentative position, and supporting various authors’ opinions that stealing is wrong regardless of the context in which it occurs. The essay argues for this position from the moral or ethical sense of the vice and with specific reference to downloading free music from the internet.

In articulating the thesis, the author makes it clear and understandable that the paper is to provide arguments for the belief that stealing is always wrong. The thesis is also cited in the paper’s introductory paragraph. This enables the reader to continue with a clear idea of what is expected in the paper. It is desirable for any good piece of writing that the thesis stands out early enough in the work. The author makes the reader aware of the intended purpose of the paper, and probably the anticipated audience too.

Second, in support of the outlined thesis, the author provides arguments for the position held. The arguments provided are supported by relevant evidence that makes the essay relatively easy to comprehend. The author appeals to both reason and emotion in his arguments using ethical allusions and comparisons. For instance, by comparing free music downloads from the internet to home taping, he appeals to the readers’ reason since it is comprehensible that one form of stealing cannot be right simply because the perpetrators are more difficult to apprehend. At the same time, appeal to emotion arises in the author’s perceived concern about the economic well being of the artistes.

Moreover, the author also provides arguments against his stand and makes his point by countering them. This makes the essay more alluring since it reflects the author’s interest not only in convincing the reader of the ethical ills of downloading music from the internet, but also in the works done by proponents of the purported vice. Consequently, any argument against the author’s point of view is subject to evaluation and possible countering.

In addition to this, the author uses the principles of argumentation, comparison and illustration to put across his point. These aspects of writing improve the readability of the essay making it more persuasive. Furthermore, they make the arguments for the thesis flow in a logical manner. The arguments presented by the author are also consistent throughout the essay and in support of the essay thesis. Besides this, the arguments presented are also convincing. This is further enhanced by an appropriate choice of reference materials.

On the other hand, one issue that limits the scope of this essay is the fact that it concentrates only on the ethical aspect of stealing. However, from the legislative point of view, some arguments could be obtained that make a certain viewpoint to look completely different ethically i.e. when considering the moral implications of an action.

In his arguments, the author could have been biased based on cultural and psychological factors. These biases were most likely to influence the selection of reference materials, the proposal of the evidences for the argument as well as the conclusion drawn from the analysis. However, since the argument given by the author is persuasive enough, the impacts of these biases can be concluded to be negligible.

From my point of view, I also consider stealing to be always wrong and thus I support the author in his arguments. My belief is dependent on deontological theories, which state that an action is morally wrong from the principle that the action itself is wrong. Therefore, since stealing is wrong, there is no implication or impact of stealing that can make it right whether it concerns free music download or any other form of theft.
