Philip Larkin’s poems “Church Going,” “High Windows,” “Talking in Bed,” and “MCMXIV”; and Salmon Rushdie’s “The Courter” are different in one way or the other. First, the difference among them is evident in the structure. Whereas “Church Going” has seven quatrains, “High Windows” has five quatrains, and “Talking in Bed” has one quatrain. Another significant difference among the poems and Rushdie’s “The Courter” is evident in the themes. For instance, the poem “Church Going” entails the themes of religion, spirituality, man and the natural world, as well as time. In the poem “Church Going,” the theme of religion is highlighted in the line “Another church: matting, seats, and stone…” The mentioning of the word “church” brings the religion of Christianity on the spotlight.  On the other hand, the poem “Talking in Bed” entails the themes of love, isolation, and broken relationship. For instance, the theme of isolation in this poem is highlighted in the line “At this unique distance from isolation…” “The Courter” also focuses on different themes that include immigration and discrimination. The line “But, I, too, have ropes around my neck I have them to this day, pulling me this was and that, East and West” highlights how the Westerners are discriminated by the Easterners and vice versa. A new perspective in some of the mentioned poems is the use of the first person pronouns “I” and “us,” which is not commonly used in poems or stories. The use of the first person can be seen in the poem “High Windows” in the line “When I see a couple of kids…” Agreeably, through the use of the first person the poets make an attempt of making the audience part of the poem or stories.  Moreover, unlike most poems or stories, the mentioned poems and story enables the audience to relate common experiences in their lives and they also prove them to scrutinize and think about their life experiences. Rushdie’s story “The Courter” talks about the experiences of immigrants in foreign countries, and this is a common experience in modern society. The poems also focus on the themes of love, religion, spirituality, and war, which are common in modern society. It is evident that several literary techniques are used in the mentioned poems and story. An eminent technique in the poems is the use of a rhyme scheme, which despite being irregular are discernible. For instance, in the poem “High Windows,” a rhyme scheme is evident in the third quatrain which is as follows:

…I wonder if a

…forty years back, b

…that’ll be the life; a

…or sweating in the dark b

Other than a rhyme scheme, another literary technique used in the poems and Rushdie’s story is alliteration. For instance, in the poem “Talking in Bed,” alliteration is evident in the line “yet more and more time passes silently.” Another literary technique evident in the poems is onomatopoeia, which is clearly evident in the poem “Church Going.” Larkin uses the word “thud” in the line “…letting the door thud shut.”  In this case, the word “thud” is a depiction of the sound produced by the door when it is shut.

Larkin, the writer of the poems in focus and Ted Hughes are considered the most widely revered poets of the 20th century in the UK. There are several reasons for their popularity not only in the UK but around the globe. First, their reverence for real life perspectives evident in themes such as immigration, discrimination, religion, war, spirituality, and man and the natural world, contributes significantly to their popularity. Of course, audiences would be attracted to literary works that address societal issues rather than being attracted to those that do not. Second, the contrast evident in their works and their opposing stands on various issues was a reason for their popularity. For instance, Ted Hughes through most of his works was a primitivist whereas Larkin was an anti-primitivist. Third, the popularity of the two poets can be attributed to the fact that their works, unlike those of other poets, conjured something up, such as emotion, hope, or fear among audiences.
