Climate change remains a looming threat in every city considering the devastating effects it could have in the future. It has been regarded as capable of negatively affecting plants, animals, and humans. For example, excessive rainfall and heatleads to low food yields if proper mechanisms are not put in place to alleviate such conditions. In this regard, Chicago is not exception and is considered to be affected by conditions that relate to precipitations, ecosystems, and temperatures. In essence, this means it will experience abnormal hot, wet, and cold climatic trends in the future. As such, measures such as research, renewable energy use, and precipitation mitigation among others will be critical in addressing this issue as will be discussed later.
Firstly, temperatures are considered as one of the major changes that will affect Chicago in the next centuries. Researchers foresee significant temperature increases throughout this century for cities such as Chicago (Robinson). This means that there would be extreme heat waves with summers being hotter than usual as a result of increased humidity. Consequentially, heat related conditions and maintenance costs are expected to rise. Intense heat would result to increased wear and tear making it costly to maintain buildings and roads (CHICAGO CLIMATE ACTION PLAN).On the other hand, heat conditions such as skin scorching will increase due to these adverse temperature conditions. Secondly, precipitation is also expected to significantly increase due to heavy downpours and snow as the years advance. These increases may be experienced during spring and summer months with an expectation of above 40 percent rise in precipitation (Robinson). Consequences of these conditions will lead to flooding, pollution, and interference with the transport systems among others. For example, flooding will damage crops in farms leading to food security issues. Similarly, such intense downpours will reduce the mobility of automobiles in the city.
Thirdly, ecosystems will definitely be affected by adverse precipitation and heat conditions that may be too low or too high. For example, intense heat could lead to plants withering leaving animals with nothing to eat. This means that if this situation is left unchecked, the number of animals and plants will drastically reduce making some even extinct. Chicago River and marine habitat are also expected to be areas of concern with such conditions. Strong rainstorms will have effects such as increased erosion and water pollution on this river. For example, heavy rains would bring more germs into the river resulting to pollution(Friends of the Chicago River). Additionally, intense heat and precipitation is likely to kill the marine habitat.
Considering these effects, renewable energy use significantly reduces emissions that cause adverse global warming. This may include utilization of wind power as an energy source and complete elimination of sources such as industries and homes that use coal power.Precipitation mitigation measures such as the “Deep Tunnel” would play huge roles in managing water overflows in future (Robinson). Such tunnels basically collect excess water during heavy downpours and storms. Furthermore, research by scientists, stakeholders, environmentalists, and other likeminded agencies would play significant roles in innovating better ways of addressing these issues.
With preparedness and resources in place, Chicago will be able to mitigate climate change considering the fact that its impacts are real and expected. Consequentially, residents will not be threatened by food and illness issues making them have better lives in future. Additionally, the ecosystem habitat will thrive.
