The term sustainability is used to mean the quality of being able to support, maintain, or uphold. In most cases, it is used to refer to the maintenance or the environment. On the other hand, the term construction is used to refer to activities or processes involved in the creation of facilities or infrastructure (Ma 4). It may be simply put as building something from the ground, for example, buildings. Construction is not only a process but would also be used to mean an entire industry. Sustainability in construction would therefore mean construction of structures in a way that upholds the environment, or the use of practices in the construction industry, which sustains the environment.
In construction, people involved in the various activities must ensure that they use the resources efficiently and never waste them; they must ensure that the activities would enhance social progress of the community, eradicate poverty, and promote stable socio-economic growth. All this must be ensure if the environment is to be preserved. In today’s world, most of the world’s energy is consumed within buildings (Kibert 16). The need to provide today’s population with decent housing should never mean that needs of the future generations are compromised. This means that social responsibility must be a priority in any construction project.
Like other industries, the construction industry is mandated to adhere by corporate or social responsibility. The regulations in the construction industry ahs however ensured that the industry respond to the social responsibility (Ma 12). Design and constructions are carefully planned to ensure that industries are created in such ways that would help reduce their wastes and carbon emissions. In this way, it would be said that the industry is attaining corporate responsibility by responding to the needs of its stakeholders and helping them improve their sustainability efforts.
The intense energy used in building, maintaining infrastructures and the products produced from them makes the construction industry the one responsible for energy saving in those buildings. Careful designing and planning would go a long way in ensuring that energy use is minimized and the pollutions emitted from the buildings or construction process reduced greatly. The wastes and materials that remain behind after construction must be appropriately disposed so that air and soil pollution is reduced (Kibert 18). Some of the wastes may be hazardous and their disposal must be planned very carefully. In most instances, the waste materials from construction projects represent resources, which have been lost during the process, the money that has not served its purpose and a threat to environmental sustainability.
Sustainable construction is ensured through many ways but most it all depends on the management and design of the buildings.the materials used, technology and process applied, resources and energy efficiency all require constructor to be very keen when making choices, The choices made would create a major impact on the environment in present time or in future (Kibert 18). Any construction project must therefore incorporate the strategies of sustainable development. Innovative concepts, contribution of outstanding technologies, and advancement of the disciplines of the construction, such as architecture, civil engineering among others are regularly applied to ensure sustainability is achieved in construction.
In this regard, it is therefore clear that construction industry must come up with solutions that would enable it provide the much needed housing while also ensuring that the natural environment is not compromised for the sake of the future generations. Innovative measures must be adopted to ensure sustainable development.
