Sample Annotated Bibliography Paper on Emissions from Concrete Industrial

Introduction

The cement industry is quickly rising among those activities and industries that are viewed to be producing the highest percentage of greenhouse gases in the environment. Greenhouses gases are those gases that are toxic and causing harm to the ozone layer, thus being responsible for global warming. Already, the cement industry is producing 5 percent of the carbon dioxide that is released to the air. Unfortunately, with the increase in urbanization, there is little chance that the production of cement is going to reduce any time in the future. Cement is the second most consumed product in the world, the first position being occupied by water. The list of things that are built out of cement in the current world is endless; the top most are houses, bridges, dams, and roads. One of the main factors that contribute to the high gas emissions from the cement industry is the intensity of heat that is used during the production process. Temperatures in the kilns where raw materials such as limestone and clay are heated go up to high temperatures of about 1400 degrees. This annotated bibliography of articles reflects upon the cement industry’s contribution to emission of gasses.

Hendricks, C.A, Worrell, E, de Jager1, D, Blok, K, and P. Riemer. “Emission Reduction of

Greenhouse Gases from the Cement Industry”. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California, USA. 2003.

This article recognizes the importance of cement industry in the current world, owing to the numerous activities that require the use of cement in their construction and maintenance. It also states that the processes that are involved in the production of concrete, which is the final product of the cement process, require high amounts of heat, thus being the reason for the high gas release to the atmosphere. I also analyses the history of cement production, mentioning the countries that are highly involved in the production of cement. The article also discusses the various processes that are undertaken in the production of cement from the preparation stage up until when the time when the concrete is ready for use.

Understanding the processes that are involved in the production of concrete and subsequently the dangers that this process poses to the environment is a major factor that all stakeholders in the cement production industry should be made aware of. This is especially because it has been earlier established that the elimination of cement from human activities is virtually impossible in this century.

Rehan, R., and M. Nehdi. “Carbon dioxide emissions and climate change: policy implications for the cement industry.” Environmental Science & Policy 8.2 (2005): 105-114.

The cement industry is soon going to find itself governed by several regulations that govern those industries and activities that contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases to the environment. According to Rehan and Nehdi, this is bound to happen because more stakeholders are increasingly becoming aware of the dangerous contribution that this industry is making towards global warming. They will force to reduce their emissions and adapt methods through which they can contribute positively to the fight against global warming, instead of the negative contribution that the industry is currently making.

The article calls upon the stakeholders in the cement industry to familiarize themselves with the meaning of greenhouse gases, how dangerous they are to their environment, alongside the dangers that cement production are causing to the environment. The article therefore, tries to explain the various aspects of environmental conservation, by discussing global warming and its effects. It highlights the different types of efforts that may be put in place by different stakeholders that may assist in the process, as well as the details of the Kyoto protocol, that may be found to be beneficial to the cement industry, before they are caught up with time.

The importance of knowledge by the cement industry is one that cannot be avoided. Once the industry is also able to define greenhouse gases, they will be able to understand which of their production processes are responsible for the production of these gases. As such, they may come closer to finding solutions by inventing alternative methods through which the same goal may be realized, but will less consequence to the environment.
