Digital technologies have become widespread both in schools and outside schools. It is quite usual to enter into a class with no blackboard, and all students own laptops. In the 21st century, most information has been digitized, globalized, and conveyed with the fastest speed that has not been experienced before. This type of literacy requires individuals to be skilled, informed, and be fluent in communication using the latest technology and the Internet. The 21st century teachers have a responsibility to ensure that students are capable of learning new concepts of analysis through charts, images, printed graphs, audio and video elements.

Critical pedagogy focuses on how education can enable individuals to become skillful in strengthening democracy and molding a just society. Critical media pedagogy enables students to exercise the available tools in education to analyze critically how authors come up with contents that depict their position to the viewers and readers.  Critical media pedagogy empowers and enables individuals to be critical to texts, resist manipulation and domination, and to convert from objects to subjects. Given that media coverage may not change in the future, students should be vigilant of the use of language to understand social construction and relations. A critical media perspective enhances students’ potential to transform the world and turn imaginations into reality.

The language arts educators should endeavor to instill the discipline using the new tools of communication without forgetting the traditional forms of literacy. The ubiquity of digital technologies has helped society to shift from print-based reading to digital literacy of eBooks and multimodal devices. Students should be taught on how to interpret texts, images, and sound, in addition to utilizing Internet to carry out research during their final projects. They should develop skills that would enable them to create information, which can be shared through websites, WhatsApp, Skype, and other social media. Using tools, such as Google Earth, can help students understand the language of directions and influence creativity.
