Extracurricular activities play an integral part of ensuring that students develop intellectual and social skills in any learning environment or institution. They are important since they complement the school’s regular academic program (Barbieri, 2010). According to the laws and statues governing the state of Florida, extracurricular and interscholastic activities are defined as any school mandated or educationally related student activity that occurs outside the normal school learning program. Extracurricular activities are mainly sports such as athletics, football and basketball and exhibitions among others. Student eligibility in participation of interscholastic and extracurricular activities mainly depends on academic qualifications and student code of conduct as laid down in the Florida constitution and statute.

Since interscholastic athletic student activities mainly aim at enhancing education among participants, academic performances are very crucial. To begin with, an eligible student must maintain an average grade point rated at 2.0 or higher based on a scale of 4.0 (The Florida Legislature, 2014). This means that if the student’s grade falls below these standards, then he or she is not qualified to participate in interscholastic and extracurricular activities. Furthermore, this minimum grade requirement is applicable during the junior or senior years of any eligible student. The school code of conduct also forms a basis of student eligibility. In order for a student to qualify for such activities, he or she must have a good record or posse’s exemplary behavior such as responsibility. Such good behavior also include adherence of the set school regulations and policies. Additionally, proper code of dress are also considered as satisfactory student conduct (The Florida Legislature, 2014).

On the other hand, if any student is found to have committed delinquent behaviors, then the eligibility of such a student in interscholastic participation is dependent upon the established schools board policies. For example, serious substance abuse could lead to a student being exempted from such activities. In relation to home based education students, various standards also have to be met. Just like other students, the home based education students must conform to the acceptable school behavior standards and residency requirements in order to be eligible to participate in interscholastic and extracurricular activities (Nafziger & Ross, 2011). Such students must first register with intended school of participation before season school activities begin. Academically, students who get education at home can be eligible if various evaluated methods are used to assess their educational progress. Some of these methods include: student’s work review by a certified teacher, correspondence grades and standardized examination scores among others (The Florida Legislature, 2014). For example, a 35th percentile and above score could signify good academic progress.

Furthermore, The Florida’s athletic association also provides various regulations to govern athletic interscholastic programs. To begin with, before enrolling for any sport, participants are required to provide physical evaluation reports. These evaluation reports should clearly state the health condition of the participant that is approved by a physician (Neola, 2015). As such, they indicate that student participation in extracurricular activities pose no health threats. Moreover, any student found to be with any life-threatening health condition is ineligible to participate in such activities. Secondly, in order to minimize student safety and health risks concerned parties such as coaches, trainers and school personnel should never recommend medication aimed at enhancing the performance of participants. Such measures would also go a long way in maintaining extracurricular ethical standards. Generally, eligibility for student participation in extracurricular and interscholastic activities depends on satisfactory academic performances, student behavior and health.
