Language acquisition or development plays vital roles in shaping children’s ability to communicate, understand or express their feelings as they grow. This development is also critical as it supports children’s problem-solving and thinking capacities. Various means can be used to support language acquisition. For example, the family can play important roles in ensuring children acquire language in the right time and manner. According to Raising Children Network (2012), some of the methods that can be used by family members in ensuring children acquire language are the introduction of new words, talking about what is happening, responding to gestures, and repetition of what children say among others as discussed below.

Generally, the best way the family can encourage language acquisition in children is through frequent natural talk. However, the mentioned methods are very essential in ensuring language acquisition is achieved in a fast and effective manner. First, talking and treating a child, as a talker during his or her first year is important in language development (Singleton, & Shulman, 2013). In this method, family members should assume babies are talking to them whenever they babble or make any sounds. Therefore, the members should babble back when children babble. Secondly, gestures involve responding to any physical signs used by children as they attempt to communicate. For example, if a child points at the fridge, it should be treated as if he or she wants food. Such gestures help children to develop language skills as they grow.

Introduction of new words is also important in language acquisition among children. This involves exposing children to a variety of different words in different perspectives. With such introductions, children are able to learn the function and meaning of new words. Talking about what is happening involves telling the child whatever either party is doing (Slobin, 2013). For example, if she is eating tell her she is eating. Additionally, repetition of words said by children helps them in language acquisition. For example, if he or she says, ‘Water’, you can then say, ‘you want water.’ The above-discussed support of language acquisition can be professionally used in future to help families with language development issues. It can also be used to educate parents on the best ways of encouraging child language development through avenues, such as seminars.
