Sample Critical Thinking Paper on Female vs. Male

Female vs. Male:

Correctional supervision refers to rehabilitation offered to an offender to address the reasons behind their offences and motivate them towards positive change. This option is normally provided for less serious offenders that have straightforward rehabilitation needs as well as a minimal risk of reoffending. Correctional supervision is applicable for a period between six months to one year. According to Sipes (2012), correctional populations in prisons, jails and community supervision have decreased.  In 2009, majority of the correctional population was male (82%) whereas the female population was at 18%. Women placed under correctional supervision in 2009 (85%) had a higher probability of being supervised in the community on probation or parole as compared to that of men (66%) (n.p).

William Wilbanks acknowledged the presence of racist individuals in positions of power within the nation’s criminal justice system and professed the importance of facts research findings and methodological rigor (Hawkins, Myers, & Stone, 2003, p. 441). He argued that the belief in widespread systematic discrimination against blacks is a myth. He did not deny the existence of institutionalized and officially sanctioned discrimination against African Americans during the past but tended to view such bias in the administration of justice as a bygone era.  According to Hawkins, Myers, and Stone (2003), despite the fact that William’s stance was criticized and termed as absolutist, many researchers are of the view that the disproportionate number of minorities is due to the fact that high crime rates among African Americans drive most of the racial disparity seen within the criminal justice system (p. 441).

The age of offenders has not changed yet. Research shows that crime peaks at around 17 and 18 years of age then later rapidly declines. This changes are connected the numerous life changes such as life changes, marriage, children as well as temperamental changes.  According to Carson (2014), the percentage of men arrested for violent felonies is 55.0% while that of women is 37.1% (p.15). The general population of a prison is estimated to be around 6,300 (Carson, 2014, p.1). The previous difference in the sentencing of female and female offenders has changed due the fact that there are currently changes in the attitudes towards women. This is attributed to feminist movements and the call for equality thus the reason why punishments for women and men are currently similar.

In conclusion the recidivism rate in women is much lower than that of men (Deschenes, Owen, & Crow, 2006 p. i). Some of the problems experienced by female inmates are; separation from their children and spouses (family), inadequate vocational and educational programs, inadequate or substandard physical and mental health care, disparate disciplinary practices, sexual abuse, lack of vocational or educational programs; and an unsafe prison environment.
