Sample Argumentative Essay on The word “Under God” Should be removed From the Pledge of Allegiance

In as much as America prides itself as being one of the most liberated nations, some of the citizens hold a contrary opinion on the same. This is attributed to violation of their freedom of worship of the chosen Supreme Mortal. Minority factions have been mostly affected as they are forced to join the majority Christians in reciting the pledge of allegiance, which has the inclusion of “Under God”. Every citizen is free to exercise his or her rights of religion and social gathering (Procon, 2). By making the entire nation to utter these words, the constitutional rights of the citizens are being violated. This essay therefore argues that the words “under God” as used in the Pledge of Allegiance should be omitted. The allegiance should be, “I Pledge Allegiance to my flag and the Republic for which it stands…” (ProCon, 1). This is because the founding fathers first wrote it in this manner, in 1892. It should also remain as it initially was as the nation comprises of more than one religion, which place their belief in different supreme beings.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written by the founding fathers in 1892. It thereafter became a portion on the American flag Code in 1942 (Hallowell, 2). However, the initial proclamation has been revised several times over the years for various reasons. One of the reasons was to ensure that the American immigrants do not pledge on their flag but on the American flag only. There have also been revision to differentiate America as the free world market. “Under God’ were added in 1954 by then President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This addition was to counter the lifestyles of the atheist Russians. The main basis was that America is a Christian nation with their belief in God. This has always been supported, as there are more than 80% of the citizens as Christians. The proponents have always asserted that the civic culture of the nation and the language has been a reflection of the religious stand. The federal law, the country’s constitution and the currency have all reflected God. The inclusion of the phrase in the Allegiance was particularly significant during World War I especially in separating the soldiers from the civilians. It was also an approach used to differentiate the atheists from the free market capitalism, which was associated with Godliness and Americans.

However, schoolchildren have been subjected to the same problem of religious discrimination whenever they recite the pledge irrespective of the religious stand and thus taking away their freedom (Hudspeth, 3). Perceptively, the pledge has become compulsory. Parents have further perceived it to be obscene as their children are forced to make allegiance to a being they cannot understand. Parents are also forced to allow their children learn about a Supreme Being they may not fully understand. The First Amendment guarantees and protects the freedom of religion. The pledge therefore is unconstitutional and ought to be corrected. It should be reversed to its former state, which highlighted the significance of being one nation.

The constitution however makes it clear that the nation is separate from the church. The constitution was further amended to defend the rights of the minority from the will of the majority (US History, 1). By repeating the phrase repeatedly, the rights of the minority, under the state law, have thus been violated. This phrase is also perceived to be against the establishment of religion, which is still protected in the First Amendment.
