Sample Argumentative Essay on Rough Draft

Introduction

The 1960s, counterculture movement was the most divisive movement for the US as the young people rejected social norms that were considered as conventional (U184199 1). Men and women were the driving force behind the push and in order to demonstrate their different cultural views, they joined hands and separated themselves from the mainstream culture(U184199 1). A major and most remarkable event in the counterculture was the rejection of the widespread support that the government had for its involvement in war with Vietnam(U184199 1).

Background

College students formed the Student for a Democratic Society (SDS) in 1960 at the University of Michigan, as an organizational base for the country’s left-wing politics (U184199 1). The term was coined to criticize features in the country’s political system, which was deemed inhibitory to true spirit of democracy (U184199 1). It was until the University of California Berkeley tried to control the political activities of its students in 1964 that the students widened their scope of their grievances to include anti-war protests (U184199 2). In 1965, the SDS supported the nation-wide campaign of students (U184199 2).

The Counterculture Movement

Hippies were the largest and most conspicuous countercultural movement in the country and they were known by their lifestyle of sexual promiscuity and use of drugs and LSD (U184199 3). In order to expand their human consciousness, the hippies embraced other practices, such as Yoga and meditation. The second feature of the movement was sexual politics where it encouraged people to embrace sexual diversity and freedom, this brought abortion and use of contraceptives with it. The rise in sexual freedom was curtailed with the onset of AIDS in the mid-1980s (U184199 3). The sexual revolution was followed by the rise in feminism; females became actively involved in civil rights movements and politics of the New Left. In 1966, the National Organization for Women (NOW) was formed to address issues affecting women (U184199 3). This eliminated gender discrimination against women.

Homosexuals groups then began demanding for their rights as well to eliminate the sexual discrimination that was targeted towards them. The 1969 issue, in Manhattan where police tried to close a gay bar led to nation-wide protests which yielded a result that later on the manner in which they were treated was a civil rights movement issue(U184199 4).

The third major feature of the 1960s counterculture movement was the anti-war protests for the war in Vietnam (U184199 4). The protests were fueled by the understanding by the members of movement that the US was acting with self-interests to spread capitalism and undermine communalism. In 1965, the SDS called a nationwide protest match to Washington DC to protest the bombing of North Vietnam by American forces(U184199 4). The effects of the protests reached climax when members of the cabinet began withdrawing their support for the war. It led to the then President Johnson firing his cabinet secretary McNamara who doubted the efficacy of the war (U184199 4). The movement’s efforts finally paid off in 1970 when the Nixon administration took power and later led to the withdrawal of the troops in the country (U184199 5).

The movement was defeated in 1973 out of government’s effort to contain activities of the group (U184199 5). The first step was to ban the use of LSD, the drug members of the group survived on. The authorities also restricted political gatherings. The government then moved to ban the objects of obscenity. The effect of these and other factors was the collapse of the once very powerful counterculture movement (U184199 5).
